My girl Harriet was spayed 4 weeks ago due to ovarian cysts, I've never had a spayed sow before so I have some questions about how boars react and also how Harriet will react to a boar etc.

We have 2 intact boars that are both living side by side but have been separated for 1.5 years due to fighting, one boar is extremely aggressive towards others, even my girls, so I think he is better off alone, but the other boar is a total sweetie who just rumblestruts a lot but it's all for show, he has never attacked only been attacked by the other boar. I think he has a chance of becoming friends with another piggy, we're considering pairing him up with Harriet. However Harriet has lived with her 3 female cagemates her entire life and although they did have a lot of squabbles and she seemed left out and unhappy at times, it could've been due to the ovarian cysts, I don't want to rush any decisions about taking her away from the pigs and routine she has known this whole time, I just wonder if she'd be happier with our boar Theodore instead of 3 other girls, but obviously I have to think hard about this.

I think Theodore would be ecstatic about meeting Harriet, if anything she would attack him, poor guy just wants a friend lol! I just want to know how likely this is to work out, I've heard that many male and female pairs get along better than same sex pairs, is this true? I also want to know things like will Theodore still try to mate with Harriet, even though she obviously can't get pregnant? I know she won't be having heat cycles to attract Theo's attention but would he still try? Just worried about infection etc.

Another option is also to neuter Theodore and he can live with one of my two sow herds, but Theo isn't mine he belongs to my Mum and she's obviously worried about the surgery, we also can't take in any more piggies, we have 11 and that's more than enough, so it seems the only way he can have a friend is to be with Harriet, of course Harriet already has friends so she's not 'looking for love' ;)

What do you suggest I do in this situation, what would you do? Thank you.

I would give it a try; at the worst, acceptance doesn't happen but at the best, you get a new pair!
The dynamics will be the same as in a neutered boar/full sow bonding. Spaying doesn't change any behaviour, and that includes mounting etc. Even my own spayed sows rumblestrut and mount when it comes to dominance, not just boars! Spayed sows don't come into season anymore, by the way, but I know of a number that have had very happy 'marriages' with a full boar.

You will find advice to aspects specific for mixed gender bondings in this guide here; the general advice for introductions on neutered territory and for bonding behaviours still applies.
