Smokey has developed a split in one of his upper incisors. I tried to take a photo, but it was too fuzzy, so I will have to describe it: The entire tooth is split lengthwise and from front to back. It almost looks like there is a very thin third tooth. The split is very unequal, maybe 1:8. The smaller part is on the outside and is quite loose. The main body of the tooth seems otherwise solid.

Is this something that will resolve itself, or does it need removing? He seems to be eating well despite it. Is it a sign of any deeper problem?

My best guess at the moment would be that he's split it as a result of an accident, Alex. I would be inclined to just monitor it at the moment, if it is loose it will probably come out on it's own at some point. If there's any signs of infection at the gum - redness, swelling - at any time then see CCT/vet for treatment.

Hi

As Laura said its best to let it come out on its own and it should come out eventualy. The one thing to watch out for is if it gets stuck to the inside of the route tube in the gum, what happens then is the the teeth re grow as normal right next to the split tooth and you end up with what looks like 3 teeth, if this happens just get your vet or local rodentoligist to pop it out for you.

Thanks both of you. It doesn't look infected, so I will just keep an eye on it.

Hmm, it's still there a week later. In fact the split part is now longer than the main part! Could the split be all the way down to the root? Would you have expected it to fall out by now?

He's still eating fine though.
