Hi all, advice appreciated to help us! My 5 year old boar is squeaking, then back legs jump up and he yelps when passing a poop. He is eating & drinking normally. I have checked for impaction & he looks clear, although his bottom looks a little wet. We can't get a vet appointment til Tues as bank holiday. Any advice how we could help keep him comfortable in the mean time? Very distressing seeing him like this.

Thinking it could be a uri or stones - will cranberry juice help? Should we avoid certain foods tonight?

It sounds like a possible urine infection (UTI) only a vet can administer antibiotics & pain relief. Blood is not always visible in a UTI. Please get him to a vet as soon as you can :)

It could be a UTI, stones or even Interstitial cystitis (IC) and for that reason I would not give him cranberry juice as it should not be given if there is a chance it is IC as it can make it worse. A friend has the human version and the doctors have advised not to drink it.

I think it sounds more like an infection or stones though as he appears to be dribbling wee. Do you have any pain relief that the vet has given you previously? if so you could call the emergency vet and ask if you can give it.

I would avoid anything that is high in calcium and any fruits, also give plenty of fluids.

If there is a chance of stones he may need an xray.

Thanks or getting back to me so quickly. We have loxicom which was given by vet for my other guinea pig as a pain killer a couple of weeks ago. Would this help? The do dosage was 3 drops per day...

He is really not right & reading more about t I think it must be stones. I have just noticed what looks like blood in the cage, a couple of small dark drops. I'm going to try & get an emergency appointment if I can. So worried....

That would help but ideally you need to speak to a vet before giving it.

Am sorry you have found blood, it could be an infection though so don't panic. If you can get an emergency appointment that would be good. If not, if you could even just speak to them tonight about the pain relief.

An emergency appointment is a good idea, if you are contacting the vets tonight I would not give the pain relief as they will probably give him a pain relief injection & also they need to know where his pain is. Fingers crossed for your boy :)

Hi All

I just wanted to let you know the outcome so far. The vet x-rayed and he has a bladder stone which is pretty big. About the size of a human finger nail, understandably this is causing him a lot of pain. He will not be able to pass it and unfortunately there are no meds to break it down. He is on painkillers now (Loxicom 4 drops a day) but he will need an operation to fix the problem. The problem is the operation is high risk because of the anaesthetic and because he is getting weaker and losing weight. We're thinking of going ahead with it as otherwise he has no chance in the long run, but we're not a 100% sure as would be gutted to lose him on the table. The trouble is we need to make the decision quickly as he is rapidly going downhill.

Has anyone had their gp have this operation and had a positive outcome?

Oh I am sorry to hear your news :( I only have experience of bladder stones in females & all mine passed them. I think as it's in his bladder that's better than in the ureter ? I'll tag @helen105281 to see if she has any ideas or knows anyone who has been through this.

I think Flintstones may be the one to ask. My Maddie had a stone and we chose to PTS as it was lodged between her bladder and urethra, causing recurring infections and she was going downhill rapidly and we couldn't control her pain even on Tramadol and Metacam. Then there was the added complication of her heart condition which would have made the op incredibly risky. However, I think it depends on the pig and whether they are strong enough to make it through the op. I know there are pigs on here who have had succesful ops. I suppose a question to ask is how experienced the vet is in carrying out such an op. I agree that it is not as complex if it is in the bladder.

I have no advice to add just want to say I'm sorry you haven't had better news and that I've got my fingers crossed for your little guy

I am sure he has. I know Amir at Vets and Pets in Broxbourne has too and is an expert at bladder surgery. He would have been my choice for Madeline if she hadn't had a heart condition.

Thanks for your comments and kind words. I am going to ask about their experience in this area before letting them do it. I have to say I didn't see my regular vet (who is excellent) today, but I will definitely request him for this as trust him as he has always been great & very knowledgeable when I have taken them in the past.

The painkillers are helping but he is still in pain. :-(

Awww poor boy :( I would think that this is something you need to research quickly & find a vet with the best skills & success in this area to give him the best chance. Fingers crossed for your boy x

We are booked in for tomorrow. I have the best vet and he is confident we are doing the right thing. Fingers and toes crossed! We know there is a risk but doing our best to keep positive.

Hiya how's your little man getting on?
Was it a successful vet visit?
Fingers crossed &healing vibes for you. Xx

Thanks for all your good luck wishes. Sadly, our little fella didn't make it. Very upset, can't stop crying - just so gutted as he didn't even have the op yesterday because the stone wasn't clear on the X-Ray & was sediment instead plus bladder infection, so started antiobiotics, thinking all would be ok. Unfortunately he had a tumour in the pelvis which blocked him up completely overnight. Tried catheter this morning but it could not be cleared and decided to pts. Just been horrible - we were up all night yesterday syringing fluids & trying to comfort him as he was squeling in pain every few minutes - so gutted

Oh no I am so sorry :( It's horrible to lose them, I cried non stop for days when Poppy passed away, she was 7 years old & they become a huge part of our lives, I understand completely how bereft you feel. He must have had a wonderful life with you, try to remember him as he was before he was ill & the happier times that you spent with him, so sorry x
