My 1.5 year old guinea pig "Mini" has today started squeaking each time that she has a fecal movement. The fecal pellets are a bit softer than usual, and she seems to be drinking more. However, her behaviour and eating habits have not changed (she is active and is doing her usual routine), and there is no evidence of illness. My wife and I are concerned. Any ideas?

Hello and welcome to the forum.

The symptoms you are describing point to a bladder infection/stones and she will need a vet to examine her. Have you a good pig savvy vet? If you could give your location I'm sure one of the forum members will be able to recommend one in your area.

Hi, welcome.
I just wanted to tell you, Our Romeo had a bladder infection and also squeaked while he pooed and wee'd. You need to take her to the vet, they will probably give you Baytril which you give orally. Hopefully it wont be bladder stones. Our baytril was 84p so hopefully if this is what they prescribe her you might get it for a similar price as then you just have to pay for the examination. Keep her bedding clean, and keep a good eye on her. Is she passing blood? Romeo passed some blood with his. Good luck, let us know how it goes.:)

Suzygpr and piggiewiggie, thanks so much for the insights. There's been no passing of blood (so far) for Mini. We wondered if a change in her diet might have caused it, or perhaps her chewing on corrugated cardboard. In any case, I will be taking her to a recommended vet tomorrow and hopefully we can get it worked out. I'll post again if there's anything to add.

Minty (who is 3) has started doing this. He is going to see Simon at the vets tomorrow to see what is going on. Minty also has a soft, moveable disc of something on his belly, just above his back leg. Like Mini though, he is acting normal. Well, as normal as he ever does!:)

I can only agree that it is likely to be bladder related. Pigs in pain with cystitis/stones will often pass when pooping as well as when peeing, and things are so close together.

cleared up

Hi guys, thanks for all the concern, and sorry that I didn't post earlier. The day after I wrote, Mini was fine and back to normal, so I didn't take her to the vet. My guess is that whatever it was simply made its way through, and she is doing everything that she used to. Thanks a lot for all the insights and suggestions!

glad to here mini is doing well
