My girl Melody has squeaky pees today, it has only just started. I dipsticked her urine and there's no blood but the protein is high, I see high protein quite a lot when I test my piggies, is high protein normal for Guinea Pigs, and also is it related to diet?

High protein isn't normal but you need to have blood tested to determine if it is a problem.

My bladder stone/sludge boy had high protein in his urine every time he was tested by the vet.

He was going under anaesthetic for a unrelated issue and they decided to take blood.

The protein is his blood was fine. So it meant that is kidnets were fine, he was just excreting more in his urine than usual.

The vet was fine with this and we never did anything about it.

Is this the same piggy that had the red pee puddle yesterday?

If yes, PLEASE keep everything that pertains to an ongoing case together; being able to take all aspects of an ongoing issue into consideration will allow us to give you much more specific and effective advice. Please be aware that none of us is online all the time and that we jump from thread to thread all the time. Being able to read up and refresh our memory will help your piggy as well as us!

If it is, you are most likely dealing with the beginnings of an acute cystitis/IC phase. I did tell you yesterday that symptoms can very inconsistent at the onset; this has not changed and can take a few days.

Please book an appointment with your vet. If you have a tendency to overtest, please stay away from dip sticks. They can make any anxiety and obsessive issues worse without actually contributing to the healing process.

No the piggy that had the red pee puddle was Willow, this thread is about Melody one of my other pigs, I have a few with urinary issues. Willow and Tizzie are seeing the vet today, Lottie and Paisley are seeing the vet tomorrow, and now I need to know if I should book Melody in also as this is a new thing, hence me asking if protein is normal or not. I have multiple sick pigs atm unfortunately and everything is a mess.

I cannot help you of course, but the fact that you are dealing with multiple bladder issues on different piggies sound me so strange. I guess there is something "wrong" in the diet...
Do your piggies eat fruits? or much vegs? vegs and fruits have an action on urine ph and bacteria need a certain ph for reproducing.
Do your piggies eat fresh grass? The piggies used to the grass (great amount) have usually less bladder issues (I have read a lot of vets reviews about this; a lot of grass, a lot of hay,few vegs and no fruits).
Anyway, as amother of a daughter who had serious bladder/kidney issues as a baby, I can say that yea, high proteins is not good and means that kidneys are not filtering in the proper way. But this can be only a temporary condition. Blood means a stone (no infection) or an infection (no stone); presence of nitrates, too, are important. Pain can be present or not...
Of course you need a vet, but I suggest you cranberry pure juice (diluited in water). I give it to my piggies, they love it and it might help.
Another thing: when a piggie is fighting over an infection here the best vets suggest to double the supplement of vit C reaching a dose of 40-50mg a day. We are adviced to use drops for humans, but usually vets make an injection. I have seen piggies recovering by themselves without important therapies. Vit C boosts immunitary system and also my daughter was given huge doses of vit C at the time of her nephritis (plus antibiotics of course). Cranberry juice is rich of vit C.
A herd with urinary issues is not normal... try to find out the possible cause :)
(cut off pellets and see if things improve)
