Hello everyone (again),

Really sorry to post continuous threads but this forum gives me a lot of reassurance and good advice, and the vet is closed and I don't know if it's a genuine emergency to call the emergency line. I'm more than happy to call the vets if needed.

Today in Squirrel's news : he has pointy poop. I only realised this after I gave him some parsley, cucumber and two one cm slices of celery for his dinner. Poos are slightly smaller than usual, probably 10% smaller, slightly pointy and soft when I press it.

He's on dog meloxicam (0.3ml once daily), bisolvon (once daily) and doxy (0.08ml once daily) for his URI. He's not had meloxicam today because the vet said to stop if diarrhea, so I didn't give him any. His poo isn't sludgy, it keeps its shape, just soft and moist, and flattens when I press it.

I'll cut out veg till the poop improves because, but should I continue to give meloxicam?

Thank you very much for the advice you've given me so far.

Hiya … and welcome to the forum !

Please never worry about posting continuous threads - we are a forum and, if you have a question … ask it 👍

we will need to wait for a health and illness guru to answer your question definitively - but it's always worth doing a search to see if similar questions have been asked in the past .

Here is a recent thread ...
Reason For Slightly Pointy Poop?

so .. your idea of cutting out veg for a day seems a good idea

I would only class situations like this as an emergency if your guinea pig has lost a significant amount of weight .

I note from previous threads that your guinea pigs are on antibiotics at the moment - antibiotics affect gut bacteria so , it'd be a good idea to give them some probiotics .
Antibiotics and probiotics

the brand most available from pet shops is called Pro C

I would also advise you continue giving Metacam as prescribed .

Thank you Veggies,

I didn't give him any veg today. I checked his weight this morning and it actually has increases - from 1516 (last week) and last night (1524g) to 1550g this morning. So he hasnt lost any weight. I'll keep weighing him in the mornings.

His poop is the same. Looks perfectly healthy but flattens when I press it and is ever so slightly pointy. There were loads of poops so he is eating.

I've ordered some Pro C from Amazon. It'll be here tomorrow.

Thank you for your advice, I'll give him meloxicam today.

I agree with giving the pro c when a piggy is on a antibiotics. Ensure you leave an hour or so gap between giving the antibiotics and the pro c.

It would be a good idea to keep him off veggies while his gut is unbalanced. Stick to Hay and pellets until things stabilise

Just an update:

Squirrel has been off veg for a day yesterday, and his poos have gone back to normal. Fingers crossed it stays this way. I started him off with a sprig of coriander and a small slice of pepper today. I will definitely limit his veg and give the necessary ones till he gets better.

I also got some Pro C, it says give 2 scoops per 500ml for piggies on medication, so I did that. However he prefers to drink it out of the bottle, so I added a second bottle with the pro c in. Probably because he's more wary of the syringe as its where the yucky water (antibiotics) comes from. I'll remove pro c bottle after a while so they don't get used to having the "yummy water". Please let me know if I'm doing it wrong!

Thank you for your advice everyone!

Squirrel's breathing has improved tremendously due to the medications, I'm so thankful to have found a cavy vet, and this forum's support xx
