Hi People,

Just a quick question. I have had my piggies for a couple of weeks now. The SSPCA have told us that the piggies we adopted were brought all the way from Inverness to Glasgow and that they were rescued by an SSPCA inspector from someone who had an abundance of them and was not caring from them well.
The piggies are kept in doors just now as we get them used to us, while they are still timid and petrified on occasion when handled they are slowly coming out their shells and will eat from hand now.

Now for the question.... can anyone provide any tips on how to train them to use a ramp to get to and from the pen and hutch. They are so happy when they get into the pen but we have to lift them down rather than use the ramp and obviously we are not there all of the time.

Cheers
Stevie.

They may get used to it eventually and use the ramp, on the other hand some pigs refuse to use a ramp. Almost all my pigs will not use a ramp. You could try putting treats all the way down the ramp (like a trail!) so they are encouraged to follow it down?

Is the ramp open or enclosed? If it doesn't have sides on it or if it's not against a wall they will not use it because it doesn't feel secure. Some, like starla said, will always refuse to use it. Other than that, food bribery is the way.

Also, how steep is it? Some ramps are too steep for them, one of my hutches is useless because the ramp is so steep they can't do it!
If it's slippery you could try putting rubber matting or carpet on it to encourage them?
