Hello
I am hoping for some advice please. In the summer my female guinea pig developed a wet bottom and with the help and advice from forum members and vets, we concluded it was most likely to be IC. She has been on two capsules of cystease a day, Metacam and Potassium Citrate since this diagnosis. This has all really helped.
When I gave her some grass in her home a while back, she started to develop a wet bottom again. When I stopped she improved.
I was reading a thread on here about Pets at Home hay not being great (which is what my two were having) and I’ve always noticed mine were not eating much of it so on Friday I went to a farm and bought them a small bale. They both love this and it smells so good. They love hiding in it too. My problem is my girl with the IC has slowly deteriorated again to the point I am back to square one with her bottom being very wet.
I think it is more than a coincidence that this is happening when she eats grass and now this new hay. Has anyone else experienced problems with flare ups on grass and hay? I know this is meant to be their main diet and helps with their teeth but I’m really not sure what to do. I don’t know whether to remove the hay altogether, just go back to small quantities of the Pets at Home hay or keep going with this new one. I have noticed when she is wet, she acts more aggressively towards her sister (which I am wondering if it’s because she is in pain?).
Any thoughts would be very much appreciated.

Hi!

Fresh grass can be a trigger food in some IC piggies; trigger foods vary individually.

I haven't heard of meadow hay as a trigger; but if you have a very sensitive piggy you may want to stick to timothy hay.
You can find recommended online providers via this link here: A Comprehensive Hay Guide for Guinea Pigs (incl. providers in several countries)

My sow has I. C and I am sure kale is a trigger for her. Grass is fine, I'm also using cytease but not noticing much improvement. Saying that though, she has quite a mild I. C but does have flare ups
