Earlier today my oldest piggy Eddie went up to the vets as he has a fairly significant fungal skin infection. At the same time I asked the exotics vet about what he thought about Eddies general condition, given that he has possible renal failure (uncertain), and is very thin these days. He suggested the use of steriod injections to encourage proteins to rebuild muscle in the body, mentioning that its fairly common for cats with renal failure to be offered this, and any animal recovering from injury needing to rebuild muscle. Naturally I'm very uncertain this is a good choice for Eddie so I've left it for now. It would be great to know if anyone has had a piggy who has had these, or understands the effects of it on an animal given them.

I know of guinea pigs who have been given steroid injections before but mainly in terminal illnesses such as lymphoma.
I think @sport_billy had a piggy who had steroid injections. Again for lymphoma. I am not sure about them being used in renal failure but I am sure someone will be along soon who can answer your question.

Yes, we have used them for Lymphoma but can't offer any advice on them for any other use - sorry. Lots of love to you and Eddie

I have experience of them being used for mange mites but nothing else am afraid.

At he end of the day, Eddie is your guinea pig and you're well within your rights to say no to the treatment if you don't feel comfortable with it

Thanks all - theres so little info on it I'm not convinced its a good idea.

I'm sorry that there is so little information on this particular treatment

I think the side effects of such treatment would really outweigh any benefit unfortunately! If anyone else can offer advice to the contrary though, please do let me know :)
