Hi, my guinea pigs are adult now (born around January last year), and when I first adopted them, they were quite a bit skinnier than they are now (adopted in May this year from someone who could no longer look after them).

When I got them, the hay they were fed on was brown and I think it was actually supposed to be bedding hay. They hardly ate it so I was putting them out on the grass each day to eat fresh stuff, and bought them a much nicer looking and smelling hay from my local garden centre. Now they are eating much more hay (still putting them out on the grass) so I think they might've been a little underweight when I bought them, but definitely not unhealthy.

I'm concerned that they're still gaining weight - about 10g extra each week. I don't feed many treats, very few timothy-rich pellets, unlimited hay, vegetables (pepper and carrots, green beans, lettuce, or whatever I have available that day), kitchen herbs (basil, parsley etc), and grass. (And lots of dandelion leaves if I can find them in my garden).
Fruit is a very occasional treat.

Is it normal for them to be gaining weight still or should I cut back on say, the vegetables? I didn't weigh them when I first got them, so I only have recent records. They are about 1kg each at the moment, Frodo always about 50g more than Sam, but both increasing weight.

Guinea pigs have a very wide weight range and boars are generally heavier than sows. My two boars in their prime weighed around 1350 gms and 1375 gms. I think 1kg sound absolutely fine. You may find they get heavier than this until they become older males and then around 4 years start to become boney and loose a bit of muscle and weight, as they decline in old age

Hi,
I wouldn’t worry too much. My largest boys are around 1.2-1.3kg. I have another boar at 1.5kg. I was as concerned as you at first but they have all seen exotic vet specialists who reassure me that they are healthy and just larger as they are boars.
as long as your guys get plenty of exercise and follow a healthy diet of 80% ad lib hay I wouldn’t worry 😊
