Hello everybody. My 5 year old boar isn't eating properly after having his back teeth filed down yesterday under anaesthetic. Before that all four of his front teeth had become slanted one way so they were trimmed too.

However he still isn't able to eat much on his own unless I cut it up in very small pieces, he just picks it up and drops it or just walks away. I've been having to blend up vegetables and grass into little balls and pop them in his mouth for him to eat which he seems ok with.

Do you know what might be wrong? I don't know what more I can do, it's very upsetting because he is interested in food and seems to want it but can't pick it up. His front teeth are still not perfectly straight after being trimmed but the vet said it should be ok, what do you think?

Any help will be really really appreciated

Please top him up with hand feed for fibre (up to 80%) and grated veg for vitamins for the time being. It can take some time and some remedial teeth fliling to get the teeth back into order again.

Has your vet given you some metacam or other painkiller? His mouth will be very sore and the teeth won't quite fit together properly yet. With clipped front teeth, he will also struggle with picking up food.

Here is our complete hand feeding guide, which you may find helpful: http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/threads/complete-hand-feeding-guide.115359/

Thank you I hope it is just that he needs adjusting and to wait for it to stop hurting, they didn't give any painkillers. I will definitely do that so hopefully he'll be okay until Monday when I'll bring him in again. Thank you so much for your help.

Wiebke's given great advice, just like when we've been to the dentist, he probably doesn't feel much like eating to start with and it can still be a bit sore. If he's not going back to the vet til Monday, keep and eye on his weight to make sure he's getting enough food and you can hand feed him as well to make sure he's getting enough to eat. Painkillers would be good, piggies hide pain well so if he looks uncomfortable he is probably struggling with pain and that stops them from wanting to eat too.

It's hard work but it's worth it in the end. It can take a while for them to get back on track but it's important they keep eating even if it's with help as their guts don't do so well if they stop eating completely.

I run a sanctuary for guinea pigs with dental issues, so have lots of experience.
Did the vet explain what had been done to the teeth? Were they just overgrown? Was it just the bottom teeth that were long and trapping the tongue? Was there any soft tissue damage to the mouth or any ulceration? Did the vet feel all round the jaw for any swelling that would suggest a brewing abscess? Were all four arcades of the mouth filed or was the problem in just one part of the mouth?
Sorry for all the questions, but it will help me advise you on what you need to be doing.
Where about are you based?

He said the bottom back where just overgrown by a bit on one side, said because he's old the bones are weaker so they're misaligned so can't wear down properly so will likely need trimming again in time. I saw him feel him don't think he felt anything. He has watery eyes so I asked about overgrown roots and he said it's likely. He didn't mention any tissue damage. Today he's been drooling and his mouth smells a bit so taking him to the vet in a few hours. Hopefully then they can do something. I'm based in Manchester. Thank you so much for your help I really do appreciate it, hopefully he'll be ok.
