Hello!

Here's a story from when my precious pigs were babies. I'm just going to tell you now, in case of triggering or alarming someone, everything ends up fine. Spoiler Alert.

I had my 2 baby pigs in one of those pop-up ball-pit things. They weren't in a ball pit; it was set up to be like a cage, not permanently, but just while I was cage cleaning. The cage (and pop-up thing) was in my bedroom, which I shared with my sister.

I left them alone in the ballpit thingy. I was just in the other room. I SWEAR I shut AND latched the door behind me. I still blame my sister for leaving it open.

I was just down the hall when I hear loud wheeking, unlike anything I'd ever heard before. The pigs were relatively new, so unusual wasn't necessarily alarming. I grab my phone to sneak in and record what I assumed was playing, zooming, popcorning, etc.

My first sign of something wrong was seeing the wide-open door as I approached the room. That was very out of place, as I distinctly remember shutting and latching it, so I quickened my pace.

I still remember being engulfed in fear as I saw the dogs. MoreDog, who is famous for killing wildlife, was completely IN THE BALLPIT, her face IN a 1-entry fleece hidey! Scout, our other dog, had his front paws on the edge of the mesh wall of the ballpit, pushing it down and making the whole thing bend. I'm hearing extreme wheeks, that I can now tell are fearful cries for help.

Needless to say, I kick the dogs out. In retrospect, the fact that MoreDog did not come out with a face full of fur - or other, unthinkable parts - but just normal face... that should have been a relief. I hardly noticed.

I could tell that Poppy was fine. Right away. She was in a hidey that you can see right in. It hardly counts as a hidey. A chew toy! She was frozen, but began to move soon after. The dogs were no where near her that I saw.

My heart raced as time slowed down. I was expecting a dead, mangled sweet Daisy-Doo, with missing parts and exposed guts. The fact that MoreDog's face was clean did not register. I braced myself and looked in the hide, and...

Daisy was fine! She was terrified. And soaked in neat tongue streaks. MoreDog was LICKING her! It wasn't about predator-prey, it was "Hello, we are friends now!" Golden Retriever mutt, am I right? Poppy had a tiny wet spot, a single lick. Could it have something to do with Aby v American, how the fur is laid out?

Obviously, the pigs got so many treats. And comforted.

I know for a fact if my dog wanted them dead, they would be. But my dog had Daisy practically in her mouth, yet Daisy lives.

I'm still careful. Very careful. I learned from these mistakes. There has never been a situation since, and never will be. But I know now what I didn't know before, and I trust my dogs more than ever. Dogs truly are a hooman's best friend. Tied with guinea pigs, obviously. And my dogs are truly special. I know, to the bottom of my heart, that my guinea pigs are alive today because my dogs knew that we loved them, and that there was still enough room for them in our hearts. ❤️

Here's some pics!

I took no pics at the time of the event.

Glad to hear that nothing went wrong. However, I would still be very cautious with dogs around guinea pigs. They didn’t do anything the one and only time but that wouldn’t make me trust them any more around piggies.

Some members have heard of tales that had an unfortunate ending. But it’s good you’re aware and tread carefully.

Haha, yes! I'm still very careful. I know how lucky I am. And blessed. I'm sorry about all those poor guinea pigs who weren't so lucky. But I still appreciate my dogs, and their friendliness. No less careful. But it's still amazing.
