About 2 months ago, Charlie started making a deep croaking noise like a frog at night. I took him to the vets but she said he was perfectly healthy. I also took him to a guinea pig rescue for a check up and he made the noise while she was holding him. she said it was very strange and she has never heard a noise like it. His hearts, lungs etc are all fine. She said to keep an eye on it so I did and it went within a few days.

So last night I was sitting in bed and I hear this noise again, it's so loud I turned the lights on and went to look at Charlie. It wasn't him though, this time it's Kenny doing it! However, he is much louder, croaking at night and sometimes during the day. He also had a check up recently and he is healthy. Just so frustrated that nobody can figure out what's wrong, it can't be normal. Like I said it's worse at night and it seems to be worse when they are stressed, ie vets visits, being picked up etc. Wish I had some way of recording it.

Charlie did have a fungal infection in his mouth a couple of months ago, don't know if that has anything to do with it? Just the only health problem he has had that I know of.

If the vet has given the all clear (assuming they did a full examination) could it possibly be something like a piece of hay that gets lodged ?
One of my girls often has a little wheeze after she's nommed on the hay, has a little sneeze and it disappears rolleyes
You know your piggies best but would be considering seeing an Exotic Vet if possible if this is worrying you.
Keep us posted please on the boys :)

Thanks, I am thinking it could be a bit of hay or something - Kenny was walking round with a strand hanging out of his nose last week and I took it out. Maybe he has something stuck in there that I can't see? That dosen't explain why Charlie had the noise too but he is ok at the moment. I'm going to get them both an appointment for tomorrow or tuesday at their vets and if they don't know, I will take them to the guinea pig centre that diagnosed Charlies infection.

I will post what happens with the vets (:

I get sooo paranoid with our piggies and unusual noises/behaviour...send me into a frenzy mallethead
There was a thread on here a time back that a piggy had got a small piece of broccoli stalk lodged on their teeth so I make sure any veggies now are chopped finely as I have a thing about them choking !
It may be something as simple as that but unless we're alerted to this kind of stuff ?/
One of the reasons I love the forum is that people share experiences that we can learn so much from :))
Sending hugs to you and your boys x>>

I sure hope it is something of nothing. Jeni makes a very funny noise like a crying wheeking noise, she made it when I first got her and I used to rush over to her to see if she was OK. So, now when I am ignoring her she makes this same baby noise..very demanding is our Jeni! little diva.

Good luck at the vet's and I hope you can get to the bottom of it. Very strange that both boys are doing it with no obvious health issues in either.

Hope the vets can get to bottom of it for you, nobody sprays aerosols in the same room as piggys do they, this can aggrevate breathing, or could just be hay getting stuck in their noses also maybe change hay if its bitty hay :)

I have a recording of it (just sound) on my phone but I have no idea how I can share that with anybody. I recorded it late at night when it's really bad, it's very fast and loud. I was told that the fungal infection Charlie had in his mouth could cause breathing problems, does anybody know anything about that? They have a vets appointment tomorrow at half 10 x

She has given them baytril at 0.4ml x 2 every day. She said if there is no change after a week, I should go back. Apparently Kenny has a slightly wheezy sound but Charlie is all clear. She said there are other tests they can do but as long as they are bright and eating, it is better to wait and see. They were certainly bright, Charlie was trying to eat her hair and Kenny was popcorning round the table for no reason at all lol. They're like little kids, as soon as they get to the vets they're fine :)).

We never did get answers about what this was, Charlie is now wheezing and croaking pretty much all the time
He's been to so many vets, we've tried rodentologists and he's had antibiotics, countless examinations of his heart and lungs, changes in bedding....nothing. have no idea what to do now, at a complete dead end.

Have replied and tried phoning everyday but think I am calling at the wrong time.

It's not a hooting sound is it? some vets are happy to go with a trial of heart meds to see if there is an improvement, if there is then you have your answer - heart pig. Have been able to do this with some of my own pigs. There is a pig hooting in one of the videos in the following article.

It says I need a password to see the link? I wouldn't say he was hooting through. It's more a croaky sound. It dosen't change with antibiotics. My vet says she dosen't have idea about what it is so she will refer him to a specialist next week.

Oh yes of course, if you register you will be able to see it, there are 2 different forms of membership, one is free and lets you access the articles. PM me for further info on joining if you get stuck. Thought I had shared this link before and it worked but the person I shared it for may have been a free member on there.

I hope so, his breathing is so bad at night and it's getting worse in the day. I wish we had a good vet closer.

Can you get to Broxbourne in Herts at all? I know it is quite a distance but there is a monthly guinea pig clinic there and the lady who runs it wrote the article in the link, the clinic is run in conjunction with 2 guinea pig savvy vets.

I could but it's Charlie being on the train for 3 hours each way, I think it would stress him out. He has been on the train before but only for 10 minute journeys.

Charlie is going to be seen by a cavy savvy vet early next week courtesy of piggie bank members
