My Piggie had a lot of abscesses in one area, on the side of his neck/face. He had ops. He got an infection in one area and I've been bathing it firstly with iodine and saline and now salt water, twice a day. He's been on zithromax since last sat so 8 days. I went to the vets for a check up Thurs, infection gone - fab. But before that I noticed a little wound near the area under his chin almost. He has had a similar wound, more like a graze, before whilst being treated - that was when he was housed alone, the one under his chin I believe could be from his re introduced house mate. The vet didn't seem concerned and couldn't tell me why he got one when he was housed alone.
However this wound under his chin has gone a little strange. It started as a graze, not deep just looked a little sore with minimal blood. Today its gone almost completely bald and looks like when skin has been in water a long time. The area is a little raised but I felt it and its not hard so I don't know if its just normal skin rolls. This is however on the side of his face where I bathe his surgical wound - could it be the solutions I've been using dripped down and sat on this area causing it to be soaked a lot of the time and made him lose his fur and get this weird skin?
I wouldn't have thought an abscess would form whilst on zithromax and it doesn't feel hard - but he is very sensitive about letting me touch it possibly because of the flushing I did around the area when he had abscesses.
Anyone got any ideas?
I also want to bath him as his fur has got all sorts of medical stuff in it and he is looking a bit greasy.

Maybe you could post some pictures of the area for us to look at? If the wound has changed then I think it's worth you going back to the vet and get them to take another look, always best to be on the safe side. x

As your boy has been through such a lot, it could be fungal, which is an opportunist, making the best of a lowered immune system.
I would have it seen by your vet. Ringworm can start off looking like a scratch.

I'm getting real tired of this guinea pigs problems after the other

I'll try and get to the vet but everyone is fed up of taking me. May just have to spend a fortune on cabs.

That looks raw and uncomfy, poor boy!

The problem is that when you've had one thing after another, it can weaken the general immune system, so you get opportunistic problems like fungal or mites hitting. I cannot make a clear diagnosis over the internet, but that is definitely a case for the vet! They know as well that this can happen.

PS: Where are you roughly located? We've got members from round the world, so we are grateful if you added your country, state (US) or your general area (UK), so we can give you relevant advice, links and recommendations straight away. You can do so in settings (top of the page)/edit profile/location.

From the fact that your vet is using zithromax, I assume that you are in the UK and that he is pretty competent or has access to a specialist. Abscesses can be real nightmare to get rid of.

They are on our list of recommended piggy savvy vets; you can check on our vet locator on the bar underneath the fourm logo. Your boy is in very good hands!

It is very dispiriting when you battle with one thing after another. Unfortunately, this needs to be treated, the sooner the better, but it should be much more easy to treat than a stubborn abscess! ;)

If I can get to the vets D:

He saw the vet, but looks almost fine today - vet couldn't really see what I meant but I had a pic to show him from last night. He is going to grow some samples over the next couple of weeks, 12 days until I get results to see if it's fungal.
Some one on another forum suggested he could be self mutilating, this actually makes a lot of sense to me. I don't know how to make him a happy pig though V_V he gets lots of veggies and has toys
