My guinea boy is being treated for an ear infection. He has been on antibiotics for a week and is considerably better than he was although his balance is still not good. He has been eating and drinking ok but the eating is not as much as he would usually eat and he is quite fussy about what he eats at the moment. This morning I got him out to give him his medicine and noticed something white just inside his mouth. At first I thought it was pus but on closer inspection it is hard, attached to the inside of his cheeks. There is no smell to it. I gently pulled one piece off but it was stuck quite firmly. I can only describe it as looking and feeling like a piece of apple but he has not had any apple. What else could it be and why is it sticking to the inside of his mouth. I think it has been bothering him because around his mouth is quite dirty, looks like he's been dribbling and his front feet are quite dirty where I'm guessing he has tried to push it off. Any ideas?

Hmmm that's an odd one.

I'd recommend going to the vets so it can be removed safely as it is bothering him, if it hasn't already come away.

My first guess is that it's a bit of boar glue (an excretion that is meant to plug up the females after mating) and he has been 'doing what boys do' when there are no females about. I have to say I've not had a boy get inside his mouth before.

It could possibly be linked to the ear infection, but my best guess would be boar glue.

I would guess oral thrush, since this causes white plaques in the mouth and
can be brought on by antibiotic treatment. You would need to see your vet for confirmation though.

Could be any of the above. Get a vet to have a look to be honest. Piggies mouths are usually full of chewed up food, so could be anything, but best bet, see a vet.

Thankyou for replies. I don't think its the first suggestion as I'm sure he hasn't got the balance to be able to do that at the moment without falling over! I hadn't even thought of oral thrush but I have got daktarin gel so will use that. Another thought I had was he has been eating alot of pepper, could this have made his mouth sore? The patches look more like scabs now. Because he is being fussy at the moment and not really eating carrot and broccoli I have been giving him pepper for vit c. I did also come across chelitis (sp?) which it could poss be. Would he need a special cream from the vet if it was this? I haven't been able to take him today but will tomorrow.
