My 3 month old sow had what I thought was a piece of wood shaving stuck in her bum/lady area but I gently pulled it out and it was this. I have never seen anything like it before. Any idea what it is? It seems like something bodily.

Hi

Could it be dried mucus from the mucus barrier at the exit of the caecum, the last and largest fermentation chambers of the lower gut? We see occasionally a small amount of mucus slipping through; more often in guinea pigs with ongoing digestive problems but not necessarily.

Otherwise it may be something eaten that has not been digested?

And no, I haven't seen something like that in a sow, either.

It’s so strange I’ve never seen anything like it. She didn’t react when we pulled it out. I’m worried about parasites.

Just keep an eye on her for the time being. What bedding is she on or has she been out on the lawn?

She’s on dust free wood shavings and hay when in the shed and fleece when in her play pen inside. She hasn’t been out on the lawn lately.

Could it be a not properly digested part of shavings that has not ended up in the appendix? I cannot judge on the texture from the picture.

If you have concerns, please contact a vet.

It was quite soggy and floppy and felt slimy like kind of skin but was wrinkly. Was very bizarre.

I will probably contact a vet as I’m very concerned it’s a worm or something

Looking online some people have reported something similar and it’s a ‘mucous plug’ to do with first heat cycle. Have you heard of this?

It definitely doesn't look like a worm (we have seen a very few on here) and I would not worry about parasites and it doesn't sound like anything bedding-related. You can eliminate both those angles. ;)

It rather narrows down to something mucussy that has either come from the gut or the reproductive tract but since there is no blood attached to it, I would not be worried. Most of these occurrances are one-offs, which makes them very hard to narrow down. We see mystery mucussy/jelly-like deposits in both boars and sows but not often.

And we haven't come across any incidences of mucus plugs in a sow's first heat on here since we are not a breeding forum. Most sows on here are older when they are bought/adopted so we cannot comment on that angle. Your girl is also older than that.
