Okay so my piggy Jak has recently (literally in the past few hours) had red urine. He's eating fine, not urinating more than normal (as far as I can see) and not in any pain - I rubbed him down and gave him a prod and he was fine, albeit a little grumpy for obvious reasons.
As far as I can tell he is acting normally though he hates the heat, being slightly longer haired.

Now the urine itself is red, but bright red but dark red but dries the same colour as the other urine patches, that being a sort of brown colour. It smells fruity, specifically like cherries, and I did give them some a little while ago as a treat, so I'm wondering - is this likely to be a uti or is it just the cherries?
I'm monitoring the situation, and I gave him a precautionary dose of baytril to tide him over while I keep him under observation for a day or so. I'm thinking if it goes away, great and ill still keep an eye on him, and if it doesn't I'll take him in for a check up. I'm just kinda looking for advice really - I have given him some other red foods, like peppers, and he nicked a strawberry from me earlier (naughty, I can't leave fruit lying around for even 10 seconds!) and I know fruit can colour urine, I'm thinking its that more than anything because of the smell (it doesn't smell like urine, just fruit) bit obviously better safe than sorry.
That about covers it, any advice would be appreciated!

I would think it is the red fruits but monitor over the next few days and go from there.

Thanks! That's what I'm doing - gave him another dose of Baytril this morning just to be sure, but he seems to be okay which is good! His urine is back to normal, but I'm still gonna monitor him.

It might be worth getting some urine test strips from the chemist (Multistix GP for example). They would be able to tell you for definite if there was blood or protein in the wee (signs of a UTI). And if you are giving Baytril, some probiotic wouldn't go amiss, to protect his gut (biolapis or Pro-C), but wait a couple of hours after the Baytril dose before you give it. Having said that, I reckon it's probably the red fruits too.

Yeah - I've also read that unsweetened cranberry juice can be good to use so I might find some of that, because I'm sure with this heatwave we've got in the UK the chance of bacterial infections go up and so it'd be best to take precautions. Thanks for the tips - I have those strips already (for medical reasons, I have kidney problems myself!) so I'll give it a go the next time he goes, thank you!
