Does anyone use straw for their guinea pigs bedding? I usually use shavings but it would be easier if I use straw.

Straw should not be used for guinea pigs. It has sharp stalks and can cause injuries particularly to piggies’ eyes. Also, as they tend to eat their bedding it has no nutritional value and fills them so is not good for them. Please do not use straw. Hay is fine.

I use hay as bedding for mine. They love burrowing in it and there is always a source of food too! I line the hutch with paper then put in around an inch or so of wood shavings and on top of that goes about a foot of hay and then after that the snugglies go in. I top up the hay every couple of days.

the only straw type bedding i use is hemp, rapeseed eg bliss, and medibed which are all chopped bedding. Barley straw should not be used as it can cause injuries.as others mention hay is much better.:)

I use a layer of aubiose and then in their bedroom area they have ings hay from hay and straw which is lovely long strands that they burrow into and keeps them toasty

Do note though... that Aubiose etc. and all the other beddings mentioned on this thread are all straw! The difference is that they're another-plant straw with a short chop rather than long chop cereal straw. But it's technically contradictory to say no to straw and then yes to those.

Aubiose is hemp based bedding not straw

It's short chop hemp straw. Straw is a very broad term that refers to the vertical stem of plants when processed and used for animal feed or bedding. As I said above, when most people think of straw they think of long chop straw made from cereal crops (oats, barley, wheat) - which is also the sort that piggies may be tempted to eat. But straw made from the stems of other plants (such as hemp or oilseed rape) is still straw, even if the piggies don't try and eat it :) I assume this is why @eileen used the generalised wording she did.
