can straw be used for guinea bedding! i heard somewhere that this was not a good choice,

has anyone got any info they can put forward on this

I use straw and hay, but sinse having the baby piggie, just Wod shavings and hay!

I use russel rabbit bedding, its fine chopped and really soft :) I think most other straws are to hard and long, something i found out when Jessie got a piece of normal straw in her eye, had no probs with russel though :D

I use straw and hay, my piggies love it :)

to burrow through, to chew on it, to hide in it, as long as they have plenty of hay available then I dont think there is a problem with using straw. People I know who keep their piggies outside swear by using plenty of straw in winter as in insulates better than hay apparently? as for sticking something in their eye - they hay I get sometimes had really hard and spiky stems from some plants in it, and the amount of time there were some grass seeds or something in between that stuck in my finger (ouch, painful) when getting hay out of the bag.. I think they are both as "dangerous" as the other.

i use straw as bedding in the winter because it gives better insulation O0 the stuff i get is cut really long which i prefer as it stays in the bedchamber. i filll it right up to the ceiling and they love making a nest to sleep in.

I think it is. I think its a horse bedding which is almost the same as Russel bedding, I'll look into it next time I go to the farm shop.

Yeah, the Russell Rabbit straw is really good, nice and soft, I sometimes get mine from Wilkinsons as its quite cheap from there :)

I am sure that straw is one thing that isnt good for guinea pigs.
Straw has no nutritional value to pigs, but is ok to use as a bedding. Medibed is similar to Russell bedding but it is chopped very finely so its not straw as we would normally envisage it. As long as hay is always present Its ok O0 personally I dont' have the extra space to store medibed or hay so I have never used it for the pigs so am not talking from experience.

My piggies love to munch on straw 98) , i use RR straw with a scattering of Harvest Straw on top & every one of them munches on it eventho' their hayracks, pigloos & lofts are stuffed with hay.

Russel bedding is great stuff - really lovely and soft, and is fine for piggies. It is so different to the thick stalky stuff you can buy.

I'm interested in views about Medibed at the moment, as I bought some yesterday, but noticed that it has been treated with some sort of citrus antifungal agent. Not sure if this is safe if eaten?

We didnt get on with Medibed for some reason it caused a couple of piggies to have an URI and i know someones horses got the same,I find it expensive too :(

Thanks Sehnsucht, that's interesting, if worrying! :o I think I'm going to use it for the bunnies only, but bury it well under layers of hay.
