Hi,

First post here. I would love any advice on how to chill out my stressed fur baby.

Little bit of background: My male and female have been living together since last July I was well prepared for babies very soon after but nothing happened between them so decided one of them was infertile or just not into each other. They have never been in a fight and generally get along.

A few months ago i noticed my female had bitten and taken a few chunks of hair out of herself but then nothing else happened, but in the last month she hasn't stopped despite me doing everything to keep her occupied, in this time she's been getting bigger but because they had never had sex before i thought she was just maturing and eating too much.

so today i called the vets as it looks like she is really hurting herself i mentioned her tummy looked a bit swollen and bloated. I then sat with her with my hand under her belly giving her some tlc i could feel something moving then something else even though she was totally still so i believe she is very much pregnant.

So now I am vey worried to why she's been pulling her hair out and hurting herself while doing it, just need some reassurance that she and the pups will be ok.

Thank You

Hello Emma

Welcome to the forum. We do not support intentional breeding on the forum and are a pro resuce forum. https://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/pages/terms-and-rules/

Poor little piggy - You need to get your girl to an experienced vet as something does not sound right there. Where are you located?

Pregnancy is not a straight forward process and can be dangerous to mom and pups. Are the boy and the girl separated now?

Vets based on your IP here. Please get your piggy to a vet ASAP as soon as possible for a check over,

Hi and welcome!

Please be aware that we are strictly non-breeding forum and that you have signed up to complying with our very clearly laid out rules when you joined.
We VERY emphatically do NOT support keeping un-neutered pairs and will only provide support if you separate your pair asap until your boar is 100% safe to join her again 6 weeks after his neutering operation.

If your sow is biting herself, then she is in major discomfort. Please see a better vet and have her checked carefully for mange mites or a fungal skin infection, which is not uncommon in pregnant sows or nursing mums with the extra pressure on the body. Please make sure that your sow is on a good diet to bolster her body and strengthen it; mites and other opportunistic problems are much more common in pregnant sows on a less than optimal diet and care.

You will have to discuss with your new vet to which extent you can safely treat mum with good quality products during pregnancy and in the early stages of the nursing period. Opinions on how safe ivermectin is for embryos and nursing pups are currently very divided, so the decision must be yours as to what you prioritise. The fact that the vet who you have seen is ignoring this aspect is worrying.

Thank you for your help, both piggies get 6 month health checks I have done everything to the book. She is booked in for her appointment at 5:50PM today to see the vet I've moved areas so this is a new vet. One of them will be neutered, and I'm aware of all the dangers that come with breeding guinea pigs, due to the fact that my guinea pigs had not been sexually active for 6 months I was only really thinking about my male neutered as its life threatening if a female gets pregnant 12+

It is usually easier to get the boar neutered. It can sometimes happen that piggies have fertility problems or are sterile, but that is comparatively rare - and there is unfortunately always the risk of a pregnancy nevertheless.

All the best when seeing your new vet!
