Hi everybody,

I’ve adopted a little piggy in January, and the next day I heard that she’s sneezing and had runny nose so I took her to the vet and she was put on marbocyl for 3 weeks and we had no improvement.

Then we put her on doxycycline for 2 weeks, she wasn’t getting worse but not getting better.

Then we had Bactrim for two weeks, and you guessed it, no change.

Obviously my poor piggy was having a hard time gaining weight and had a major appetite loss even though I gave her probiotics and I was topping up with syringe feedings.

Then I decided to to get a nasal discharge exam done. When we got the result we started giving her Zithromax for 14 days and by the day 5 her nose was all clean and she stopped sneezing. We had a check up with the vet and she told me that my piggy Mishka is in the clear, so once the 14 day course is done we can stop the antibiotics. The problem is two days after we stopped it her sneezing and runny nose is back. I tried calling the vet yesterday and sent her an email to ask if I put her back on Zithromax or wait and see what happens but the vet is impossible to reach. So I gave her Zithromax last night.

Do you think I should continue the Zithromax ? I’m scared that the poor thing can’t take anymore getting so many antibiotics since 4 months. And I’m pissed at the vet cause she’s always there when it’s time to get the checks of vet visits but she’s never there when I have questions.

Sorry this was a long message.

@Mariamm Has the vet taken a swab of the discharge to test it? From it they would be able to work out which antiobiotic would be the best to use.

Is the discharge from her nose coloured, like a green or yellow, or is it clear? There's a possibility that it may not be an infection and could be allergies or a fluid issue.

Yes we did take a swab, we got the results and the bacteria that she had is Streptococcus Pneumoniae is supposed to be sensitive to Zithromax. It was working fine, but I don’t understand why two days after the antibiotic course was finished the sneezing and discharge came back. Maybe 14 days wasn’t enough to kick the bacteria ?
