Hi, my guinea pig Pinkie had a stone removed from her urethra about four weeks ago, she still has a very wet bottom and stale smelling wee, she has been on baytril for the last two weeks in the hope that this will clear up the problem. The only thing is that the problem doesn't seem to be improving and the wee and her bottom smell terrible even after washing her off. Before it was smelly but now you can smell it from the other side of the room, even after her bath and cage cleaned out thoughly. I have heard that septrin has had better results with uti's, does anyone agree or have any suggestions. Looks like I will be ringing the vet again in the morning. Any advice greatfully received.:(

I've never used Septrin on any of my piggies but a lot of the members on here have a lot more experience than I do. I think a few have mentioned Septrin being a better antibiotic for a uri. Is your piggie drinking much? Maybe you could syringe extra fluid to try and wash out anything nasty.

Yes, septrin is the better antibiotic for UTI's. I would take her back to the vet and ask for this. Is she a good drinker? if not, you should syringe her extra water to flush her badder through. Some people use unsweetened cranberry juice mixed with water too, no evidence it does good but doesnt do any harm either.

I am sure some others with more experience of UTI'`s will be able to advise you more.

What bedding is she on? vetbed with newspaper underneath, changed daily, will be better for her as it stays dry on top, she is at risk of getting sore from urine scald at the moment.

Good luck :)

Hi, thanks guys for your posts, Pinkie is kept with her cage mate on megazorb which is very absorbant, building them a C+C cage in the new year so I will be using vetbed from then on. Rang the vet this morning and spoke to the receptionist, she is going to have a word with the vet to see what she makes of the on going UTI infection, waiting for a call at the moment so I will let you know what she tells me when she rings back. Will give the cranberry a try though can do no harm. Sharon.

UTI infection

Hi, Just an update on Pinkie, took her along to see the vet this morning, the vet expressed her bladder, the smell took your breath away, Milky white urine, lots of calcium. She did a PH test and said that she had a very bad infection, so she has gone on a course of septrin for ten days. Hope this finally cures the problem. Sharon.:(

That is good, I am sure the septrin will sort her out. Sending get well wishes to her and Christmas wishes to you!
