Hi? I was just wondering, after seeing a reference to hot sheds, is it better to have a hutch outdoors during hot weather or in a shed? We had in mind that they would probably be in an outdoor run in the shade (in suitable weather) but be back in the shed for the nights however wondered whether it might be cooler to move the hutch outdoors for the Summer. What do people do?

ive never used a shed for housing before and unless it was in a shady spot i think it would be baking hot inside during the summer. mine have outdoor hutches against a fence which gives them shade all year, the ventilation is probably much better in a hutch but the good thing about a shed is that you can put one of those electric bug zappers in there! damn flies! wish you could buy outdoor ones! >:(

Mine are in hutches in a shed, in summer they spend most of the time in runs but I do have fans for the shed should it get to hot.

I have mesh panels to go in place of my shed doors in the summer so it effectively becomes like a giant hutch and is very well ventilated. I can also put fans out there as well if I wanted to. The shed is also in a shady spot of the garden. They spend most of the day in runs in the summer anyway but the shed is good for days when it rains because they have so much more space in there than they would in a hutch.

The mesh panels sound interesting, Beaney. Did you make them yourself? Do they replace the door or the windows as well?

Mine go outside in a 5ft hutch in the summer months but spend most of the day in a run in the shade when I am at home.

Thanks for your replies. When we went to the CCT a few days ago Vedra warned about leaving runs in the sun during hot weather. Our garden faces West but is long so effectively in full sun most of the day. We get some shade from a North facing fence during the day and in the morning the grass closest to the house is in the shade of the house (that grass is wet with dew in the morning at the moment). We've just put in some trees along one boundary to help create more shade - eventually.

Anyway, this a a roundabout way of asking whether you put the whole run in the shade all the time or just in the height of Summer? The run has some panels over the end to create shade - so far seems to work well. If we get a heatwave I assume the thing to do is to have them indoors with a fan going?

good question, i'd like to know the answer to that too, at the moment the sunny side of my garden dries quicker, so i am putting them out on that side,, i make some shade for them too, so they get the choice.

How about one of those gazebos you can buy to shade the hutches?

I think it would have to be a gazebo with a side panel - we have a parasol for our patio table and a gazebo with no sides and find them of little use with the sun shining from the West.

At the moment piggies are out in the sun but the top of the run is covered. The suns rays are not very hot yet in the height of summer. I do use towels or a sheet on the side of the run to give them as much shade as possiable in the hotter months. Another thing I do is give them ice packs which they love.
