well, my guineas recently got a hutch upgrade to 'Piggle Manor'. and now they're having another upgrade. into a walk in pig pen. it's roughly going to be about 7.5ftx8-10ft, depending on how much space my mom allots me. their current hutch will be going into that area, across a shed that makes up the back wall. the area will be fenced in, and have a 'roof' on mesh, and also corrugated plastic, to weatherproof it.

my boyfriend and i decided we'd take this a step further... :red

'Piggle Village' will be built in this area. we're getting plywood with which to build piggle buildings once my family has finished decorating our living room. i've got scale plans of 8 little buildings. these consist of:

  • Guinea Pig Cafe - this will have a removable lid, a base, and small rectangular holes at the base on either side - essentially a hay dispenser
Guinea Pig Prison - i have to :p little 'barred' windows
    Piggle Village Town Hall
Piggle Farm, which will be situated in a homemade low box type thing that i can put turf in, and replace when necessary
    Piggle Post Office
    Piggle Grooming Parlour
    Piggle Hospital
    Piggy Bridge

the area will be paved, and is going to be in a shaded part of the garden. it's 6ft tall, and will have a garden gate as an access point for me.

other than the 'cafe', all of the buildings will be hides. they're going to be put together using non toxic wood glue, then painted with waterproof non-toxic acrylic, so that they look the part :p

thought i might aswell share my plans with people on here... i can't wait to get started :))

For insperation, I've posted a photo from longleat which has a brilliant pen for guinea pigs this one is horseradish hospital (i'll upload some more if you wish you see anymore for ideas) :D it sounds fantastic your plan though - cant wait to see photos :)

It sounds very exciting. I can't wait to see the pictures. How about some pictures while it is being constructed too?

That sounds brilliant! I'd love to have a pen that big for them, and being able to walk in too would be great! You could sit in there and let them run around you :)

What a brilliant idea! Your piggies will love it, i suggest you setup a blog type thred when you start it to report your progress with added pigtures :p

i look forward to it, too :) have to wait for decorating to be done first though :(

i think i will make a blog, but i doubt mine will be anywhere near as impressive as the horseradish hospital (more pictures would be great, thanks :))), as i have pretty limited funding, and passable diy skills. also, as i wanted to use none toxic glue, you're supposed to use the glue at right angles, so the houses are essentially going to be boxes, with flat tops. though they may be modified in the future. as it is, i'm on £130 budget, but we already have the fencing and fence posts left over from making our massive chicken run. once i've got the gate, it'll be £100 to get finer mesh to put over the other stuff, sand, slabs and post-crete.

it'll be odd having such a big space for my four little piggles... but it's within my resolve to not get any more, as much as i may want to.

this will definitely be started within the next month, as i want it to be finished before Chris goes to university, so i'll make a new thread here and update regularly. i can start putting posts and mesh up etc as soon as i've managed to rehome the 3 hutches we currently have taking up space :p so hopefully they'll be gone soon, or i'll have to give them away locally, and i'd really rather them go somewhere with good reason i.e. a rescue (or the person currently interested, who is starting to foster soon).

Oh what a brilliant idea! Your four pigs are sooo lucky to have a mum like you :)) Gilbert is soooooooooooooooooooo jealous.:a19: Can't wait for the final product. Whatever it comes out to be - it'll be beautifulx)

it's not the pigs that are lucky because of their mom, it's me. it's my moms garden. we currently have a big pen with a mesh roof for hutches and the chickens shed/coop. as the hutches are going, and the rabbits are moving to their own walk in pen in another part of the garden, the guinea pigs are being alloted the extra space. i'm really grateful :)

my mom knows i love spoiling my sweet little fuzzies/scaleys. last years summer project was a tank conversion to a large vivarium for my leopard gecko, with a built in custom background. this years project was going to be an upgrade for my crested gecko, for him to grow into. as he's only 5 grams, he has a bit of growing to go before he'd be big enough, so in light of extra space, the vivarium funding is being used for piggles, and the gecko's new home will be built after christmas.

i really can't wait to start. i need my mom to mark out my allotted area first though, and take me to get post-crete. i can't wait to be able to just go sit with them, whatever the weather :) because of the various other animals here, mainly the dogs, cats and chickens, they don't get as much handling time as i'd like :( but with a new pen, i could just go and sit, and i'd finally be able to get them as used to me as i'd like for them to be xx>>>

This sounds soo amazing. I love the horseradish hospital. I went to a park farm where they had done something similar for their piggies, making little hidey houses look like real houses. Adorable!

Ooooo I like the sounds of this, but since you are so close to me, I feel my piggles will get jealous and want to move to yours!

Heyoo,

Hows the construction coming along? I think it's a fabulous idea using simple square wooden boxes with lids, you could paint or stencil on the brick work or bars etc :) I'm sure they'll be just as good or even better than the ones at longleat, I love home made stuff! :) Can't wait to see some photos! :D
