Sunny has hurt his leg

Just come back from the vets. Considering how strange it is that first one, than the other joint swelled she thinks it is possibly scurvy. In Sunnys case, he gets plenty of fresh veg and herbs as well as pellets and he is a good eater so he may not be absorbing the vit c :( This is probably a genetic thing and I dont know what the prognosis is long term but he is continuing the baytril for another 5 days and I am going to get abidec vitamin drops to up his levels and see if that makes any difference :-\ Back to vets next week.

Thank you for your good wishes, obviously I am very upset :'(

awwww hope you feel better soon and i really hope Sunny starts improving for you :smitten: xxxxxxxxxxx

Sending you and Sunny love and hugs

Get well Sunny

I have been doing everything the vet has told me to do. He is getting better, he is actually moving his leg alittle now. ;D It's still swollen, but it looks like it's going down a little though. The vet said that once we get the swelling under control, then we can see if anything is broken, and even if it is, it's probably started to heal. He's being a good boy though and resting and staying off his foot.. :smitten:

:embarassed: :embarassed: :embarassed: :embarassed: i don't understand i posted about little Sunny yesterday but it's not there dam it i must've stuffed up somehow i'm so sorry Fi :'( :'(

Thanks everyone :)
Poor thing must be sick of me bothering him :-\ He is having baytril, abidec, pro biotic every 2 hours by syringe and I am feeding him on my lap. I am putting fresh hay next to him so he nibbles on that too. He ate quite a bit earlier with some encouragement :smitten:
His joint is still very swollen and sore though. I will keep at it until I have exhausted all possibilities, my vet is superb which helps :)

Awwwwwww :smitten: I hope He gets better :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Thank you Chloe, this one is a mystery.
First one front joint swells up, bruised and painful. That went down then other front joint swells up, before that went down, right hind leg joint swells up. He is just lying on his back mostly and I am hand feeding him several times a day-he will take his favourite foods...mint, basil, spinach (not good I know but at least he will eat it) and managed to get some nice grass today.

I am exploring with Anne my vet, Karen from Reading guinea pig rescue, Maryh and Chrissie from GG (I am very very grateful to them) the possible cause of this and we are looking at sudden allergy to bedding or something in his surroundings, scurvy, osteomyelitis, osteoarthritis, deficiencey or overdose of calcium or phospherous. I have started keeping a food diary and am weighing all his food and working out the CA:PH ratios and what he is eating. He is still on baytril, extended to 10 day course, metacam for pain and swelling and I have started him on 50mg vit C ( 25 mg x 2 daily)

I will update on this thread as if I can find out what has caused this very unusual thing, it may be of some help to someone else in the future.
I spent half of Friday night crying my eyes out. My OH is away and I feel unsupported and scared I will lose him. I am obviously very worried but determined to find out what is wrong with my little Sunny.

Thanks :-\

Aww Fiona....I've only just caught up wth this thread !......I hope Sunny feels better soon and biggy HUGS to you.
sammy xx

Had a text back from Vedra, she thinks he is on the wrong medication. I cannot get to Cambridge though so hoping she will liase with my vet :-\ Infected arthritis has been put forward as a possibility.

Just to update for anyone who may have a piggy with these symptoms in the future:

I spoke to Vedra from the CCT. She has told me Sunny has a fungal infection caused by fungal spores in the hay. Our farm hay in the UK is not heat sterilized so fungal spores live freely in it and although it is rare for a piggy to be affected, Sunny must be prone to it so I cannot use farm hay any more for any of my pigs as they all live in the same room, only Oxbow. I have to change the bedding totally.
He will start a very strong course of itrafungal and rimadyl tomorrow lasting 20 days. He has had this for two weeks so I hope I am not too late.
My heartfelt thanks again to Maryh, Karen and Chrissie and for those of you who took the time to support me by posting on this thread.
I was upset that not many members did, especially the regulars who I have always supported when their piggies were poorly in the past.

I have spent my whole weekend on the phone and on the PC, researching Sunnys symptoms and liasing via email those mentioned above. I am very very glad I did because I love my piggies and would do anything to help them when they are sick.

Thanks for posting that info Fiona, it's really thoughtful of you to post that for other people whilst you are still grappling with it all yourself. Fingers crossed you have indeed caught it in time. I had no idea that fungal could cause that kind of problem.

You know where we are. x

Gosh, I've never heard of such a thing. It's good to know. I'm so sorry that Sunny is still not better. I can't imagine how you feel. Seeing your little baby on his back has to be heartbreaking. I sincerely hope you have caught it in time and the medicine works. I am crossing my fingers for you and little Sunny. I will check in hopefully tomorrow night for an update. I pray the news will be better.....love to you and little Sunny.... :smitten: :-* :smitten: :-* :smitten:

Hi LJ well at least now you know what the problem is you can work on the cure. O0

Sending you and Sunny love and hugs, hope treatment kicks in soon and he is back to his old self again :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

O0

Thanks for asking Julie :)
Just popped in to say we were at the vets this morning and I discussed several things with Anne, including Vedras diagnosis.
We decided that we wont rule out systemic fungal , but Anne thinks it quite unlikely and as Sunny is on baytril anyway, to extend the course so it lasts 21 days in total. I upped the dosage on Friday evening from 0.2mls to 0.4 mls x twice daily as with a third leg becoming swollen, I figured the lower dosage wasnt enough to kick the infection, if indeed it is an infection. I was advised re dosage by Chrissie and Karen, I do not recommend changing medication dosage without knowledeable advice, preferably from your vet.

If the baytril does not work, at least we have explored the infection possibilty fully and we can move on and try the itrafungal. Thanks to information Julie gave me :) I knew that we could check for presence of fungal by having Sunnys poops tested. He very obligingly dropped 7 or 8 on my jumper so they are being sent to the lab. I will update with results.

I also found out from the "horses mouth" that Oxbow DO NOT sterlize their hay, so I dont know why Vedra said they do :-\

In himself, Sunny still isnt inclined to move (which is a good thing as he can rest joints), he sleeps on his back and will not eat or drink by himself. He will eat his favourite veggies sitting on my lap and me hand feeding them to him, the same with pellets. I am syringing him plenty of water to help rid his body of any toxins as well as 50 mls per day pro biotic to help maintain his gut flora as the antibiotic dose is now strong. I am keeping him on vitamin C too. I am keeping the hay as his bedding against Vedras advice at the moment because he cannot get to the hay basket, it looks quite funny as he eats it whilst lying on his back :smitten:

My vet, nor any other knowledgeable GP people that I have contacted have heard of this type of joint/limb swelling in the way it has happened one by one in Sunny and at his young age, he is 6 months. So hopefully we can find out the whys and wherefores and this can be of some benefit in the future. I did not realise how little information there is on GP's out there and for all their bodies are so small and you would think relatively simple, sometimes their symptoms are an incredible mystery.

Will update soon.

I hope Sunny is feeling a bit better, just a thought Jumbo and his abscsses did not respond well to baytril but ceporex really did the trick O0 would your vet consider trying a different antibiotic, it is important with the ceporex to keep using bio lapis to help digestion but it really seems to sdo the job for striong infections, might be worth asking about.
My best wishes to you and Sunny.

Poor little Sunny he is really in the wars isnt he, and of course his Mummy must be sooo worried.

I am keeping you both in my thoughts and sending all the healing I can your way, hope you find out what is wrong soon and that you can get the little one back on his again.

Poor Sunny and at only 6 months. Hope the tests help one way or the other when they come back Fiona.

You're doing a fantastic job with him, it's so worrying and exhausting. At least you have some great assistance on your side! O0

Julie x

Crumbs Fiona the poor little chap is really going through the mill! I only found out yesterday (thanks Julie O0) that Oxbow isn't sterilised, what an earth are you going to try now?

I do hope his new med regime helps and thanks for keeping us posted, it is very helpful to all piggy owners to be made aware of possible problems, particularly such unusual ones. Come on Sunny, we are all rooting for you.

Oh Fi what else does this little guy have to go thru :'( :'( :'( :'(
