Please note there is talk of puss and smell in this post-

I noticed a smell from the piggie cage that wasn't normal when i woke up, i only cleaned them out a day and a half ago and i couldnt put my finger on the smell from the cage.
So after cleaning them out again, i inspected Sweep- noticing the smell was from him and on the bed he had been lying on. I checked him over as when i adopted him, he had a record of impaction, i checked his Penis and anus and noticed a bit of dried poo about a cm or 2 above his penis, i wiped him over with some wet cloth and under the poo is a small cut (maybe a cm in length) that smelled. I feel awful. I dont know if its a cut or a abscess that had burst. It was a puss smell i could smell. I only checked him over a few days before, i check his "privates" every 3 days on clean out. I just feel so guilty :(.

I cleaned the wound, as best i could (he's terribly wriggly in my arms and still getting him used to being handled as he just wants to jump).
I have also given him Baytril i have in and metacam for any pain.
I have him booked him in for tomorrow morning at 10:45.

Wish us luck

Jenny, nobody would have spotted the cut in that obscure area. You are a fantastic mum to Honeep so please do not feel guilty. I wish him luck at the vets.

Jen, there is no way with all the will in the world you can catch everything especially in such obscured areas. We missed fungal on a belly a while back. Good idea on the metacam and well done for getting a quick appointment. Healing vibes to Sweep x

Please don;t worry too much....and in no way should you feel guilty!

What you think is an abcess smell could just be a "stinky boys" smell.

It is not unusual for boars to get hair/detritus wrapped round their willies with further boar glue/smegma and anal sac secretions all added into the mix. It's quite a "heady" cocktail and trying to gently remove it can reveal some small lacerations on the willy underneath.

See what the vets says...but baytril may not be necessary to treat this condition.

I have several "stinky/cauliflower willy" boys and I periodically gently lower their bums into warm water diluted with F10 disinfectant. I "agitate" and "extrude" their bits to try and clear the sometimes hardened hair/smegma.....then dry them off.

A carrot/veggies afterwards and all is fine.....until next time!

Thanks everyone. :)
Pebble - my first thought was it was " boar" smell, until i saw the cut on his tummy (just above his privates). It was quite a shock finding it- but looks better than it was earlier since being washed. :)

If he has a very "laden" willy...them nibbling the area on his body where it rests in the sheath would not be unusual.

This is all pointing to a professional and through veterinary willy exam (sorry Sweep!)

Oh dear Mr sweep! Sounds like you have everything under control though, don't beat yourself up over it cos you're doing a fab job x

Thanks everyone. It is an absess :S had to take sweep to my old vet as o cant get down to Andover this week as my mums knee is bad so cant drive. But wish I had just gone down on the train and borrowed the money. She wasn't the most possitive of vets and said abscess are hard to treat in piggies...
I have a wash and some baytril...but if no better by next week or if he gets worse will borrow money from my family and take him to Andover. I just feel so down.
Is baytril and antiseptic wash a usual route?

I think either way I may just take him to Andover next week....by train if my mums knee is no better.

Did the vet drain the abcess at all and were you advised to leave it open?

She squeezed the pus out etc and gave me a wash to do 3 times a day along with squeezing what I can out.

That makes sense. Hopefully it will help. If it doesn't seem to be clearing up though it is worth asking the vet about Zithromax as it is apparently very effective on abcesses.

Thanks. Yes will do. As I say I may just go to Anton vets as usual next week just to be sure. But will be keeping a very close eye in the mean time.
Bless him u would never know he was poorly.. He's as hungry and active as ever. He loved the car journey bless him.

I hope Sweep is much better soon. I know how horrible it is as Toffee aka Buffy has one on her throat.
I'm a bit dismayed that the vet thinks they are hard to treat :( sending healing thought to Sweep x

Taking Sweep to see my normal vet John in Andover on Saturday morning... Trying to keep the wound open, but its healing, despite me trying to keep it open.
