Sweetie has a UTI

Oh, great that there is an improvement. Did the poos look the same this morning, or more normal?

This morning's poos are much more normal. A bit pear-shaped and on the small side but in the normal range none the less. I am just feeding Sweetie now.

Sounds like you're doing an amazing job of caring for her and I'm so glad that you're seeing encouraging signs of improvement. Really pleased for you both and hope it continues x

Pleased Polly hope she carries on improving. Well done!

Well done, you're doing a sterling job with her. It's hard work and so emotionally draining when it's your own, but incredibly rewarding when they do start to rally round. Keep on poopin' (and eatin'!) Sweetie! xx

Thanks, everyone. Sweetie has been out with me this afternoon and is now back in the cage. She is not yet back up to full strength but is eating on her own albeit slowly. I have been offering recovery regularly, but often she has preferred to eat grass and carrot tops on her own. How much should I continue to feed her the recovery food? I am guessing that I need to be weighing her daily to see if she is able to sustain her own weight.

Also, I am concerned that she still seems to be in pain when she is not weeing. She keeps having spasms of pain and lifting her bottom, but while she has been doing this this afternoon she has also been pooping. I do also think she has also been passing wind. Does this sound normal?

Minnie has also been diagnosed with a UTI and is now on baytril and metacam.

Really hope both Sweetie and Minnie respond to the meds soon and feel a bit brighter.

Hugs all round. xx

Thanks for asking.

Sweetie is on my lap and we are watching Wimbledon. I am still force feeding recovery and carrot juice. Sweetie will sometimes eat grass and carrot tops on her own but not as much as yesterday.

She is doing smaller poops than yesterday which means that I need to step up the recovery again. When I was feeding her yesterday she was either biting the cozy in pain or eating grass on her own which meant that she didn't have as much recovery and juice as she needed. Her weight is stable.

Minnie seems fine and is still eating heartily.

Good that Minnie is doing well and that Sweetie is taking the recovery food and bits. Hang on in there everyone. x

I have fed Sweetie nearly all day and put her back in the cage about 30 mins ago. Thanks to my feeding she is 22g heavier than she was this morning.

She looks very content and keeps blinking her eyes as if she is very relaxed and happy. Her wee is now less smelly and overall she seems brighter and in less pain. I am a bit freaked that she is so relaxed, though, because I am worried that it could just be lethargic but in a different way.

She must be exhausted, though, because the pain must have been stopping her from having her usual little naps and the stress of the the week must also have been very wearing for her.

Any ideas?

Can offer no advice, but glad to hear that both girls are doing well.

I hope the lethargicness is a tired reaction to her stressful week and nothing of worry x

Thanks, Michelle. Sweetie had some tomato when I gave the piggies their tea tonight so this is a really good sign as it is the first time she has eaten vegetables in the big cage since Treacle and Piggy Wiggin died. she also went to get some broccoli, but Minnie wouldn't let her have it! I put some broccoli next to Sweetie in case she fancied a nibble later on. I am going to get her in a little while and weigh her and start her evening feed but overall I am feeling more positive than I have all week.

I was so worried that I would lose her. I really can't describe how worried I was.

Well done Sweetie. It is sounding much more positive. I think you've coped amazingly Pollie. I'd have been beside myself with all you've been through recently.

xx

I'm with Flips, I can't imagine how you have been feeling and I think I would have gone to pieces

Just so glad that she's hopefully (finger's crossed, touch wood) on the mend.

Sounds Like Minnie hasn't lost her appetite though ;)

Thanks, guys. It has been an awful week that just seemed to come from nowhere. The only good thing is that at least currently I am able to work quite flexibly and often from home as I don't think I could have left for work leaving Piggy Wiggin and Treacle to die on their own on Monday.

The vet was very entertained that Minnie weighed 1250, given that three of the four guinea pigs I have recently brought to them have been losing weight or underweight! I am very surprised that the same infection has affected the pigs so differently as Minnie is running around eating everything inspite of the fact that she is peeing blood and has only just started treatment whereas Sweetie was moribund in the early stages of the infection.

If Sweetie is in pain when her poops return to normal I will have to insist on an x-ray to rule out stones. If there is no pain, though, I will have to conclude that she was mourning her friends. I did notice that she became quiet when Treacle went downhill nearly two weeks ago but assumed it was because of the heat. As she showed no other symptoms I had no reason to get her checked out.

I've had a very difficult day with Sweetie. When I went into the guinea pig room this morning her breathing was very laboured and I thought I was going to lose her. I have filled her with juice and food and she is much, much brighter. I think we will be back at the vets tomorrow. It is such a shame as she was showing real signs of progress up until I went to bed last night.

Oh dear, really hoping she picks up overnight. Sending loads of healthy vibes to Sweetie. Hugs to you. xx

Sorry to hear it's not going smoothly Pollie, they do like to have their ups and downs. Good luck at the vets tomorrow. xx

I have fed her lots and lots today and am just about to start feeding her again. I have moved on to mushed pellets as they seem to be a better consistency and Sweetie seems to prefer them to the recovery food. She stopped wheezing at about midday, so I think that she may not have eaten or been drinking overnight as I had hoped. I feed her until 1am this morning and check on her in the night but she seemed to be in pain and I was nervous about force feeding her in case I made her worse. I think I am just going to have to feed her regardless of how she looked as she was not pooping earlier today and so her gut must have been empty at some stage. She is now pooping again and although they are tiny they are perfectly formed and get bigger all the time.

I am thinking of asking the vet for some reglan tomorrow so that I can administer it myself if she keeps having problems. I feel that I will have her checked for stones only once her gut normalizes as her pain seems linked to pooping and she seems more comfortable after she has pooped.

I think it's best to go with your instinct. Hope you both have a good night. Will be thinking of you. Let us know how Sweetie is tomorrow. xx

Thanks, Sharon. I have just given Sweetie 10ml of water and 25ml of pellet mash. I have switched to a 2.5ml syringe which we are both finding quicker. This means that Sweetie can have a rest between feeds whereas with the 1ml syringe it was taking ages and the feeds were running into each other. This meant that Sweetie was in my lap for too long whereas I think she benefits from moving around the cage as it helps her poop.

She had half a lettuce leaf when I gave the piggies their tea. so she is still able to eat on her own some of the time.

Pollie, Just to let you know we are thinking about you.
I think having her checked for stones is a good idea if anything it'll put your mind at ease.

good luck, do let us know how you get on, Sending healing wheeks to sweetie!

I do hope you can get some sleep tonight Pollie and sweetie ofcourse! x

Thanks, Joanne.

I have just been watching Sweetie in the cage. She was arching her back as if she was in a lot of pain but then I lifted up the footstool hidey and she ran away to reveal a large pile of poops. I was very pleased!

I am going to feed her again at 1am and I hope that once her gut is working properly then she will no longer be in pain. I think it all depends on whether or not increasing the volume of food she is getting helps or proves more painful.

Do you think it would be possible to get her Xrayed tomorrow without GA just to rule out stones quicker?

I think I will ask. The only thing is that I know she has had gas this evening as her flanks have been bloated and tender. It seems to much of a coincidence for this gas not to be related to the pain she has pooping. However, I have hand fed her to the stage where her poops are a reasonable size before (her poops last night were a really good size) and for some reason she is in too much pain to continue eating on her own.
