Sweetie has a UTI

Apparently Gas will also show in an Xray. I don't know if a blockage would too. Unfortunately I don't know enough about pigs health, I'm merely speculating on things that may help.

I do know my girls were both diagnosed with UTI's but it didn't effect them in the slightest except some bum wiggling and crying. That was about it. Then again humans react different to illnesses maybe its the same for pigs? The fact she's grieving might be effecting her too.

Yes, the difficulty for me is that there has been so much going on.

Could Sweetie have had a kidney stone which caused her to have a UTI which she passed on to Treacle and Piggy Wiggin which then caused them to become terminally ill very quickly because they were old and their immune systems were functioning optimally?

Or was she depressed at their passing which caused the UTI which was then passed to Minnie? Minnie is eating well and not losing weight so there is definitely something else going on with Sweetie. Is it depression or is it pain from a stone? It seems to me that pain in her flanks is worse for her than pain from her bladder.

Oh no Pollie i was hoping to read that Sweetie was feeling a bit better today/tonight :(
Gut instinct with piggies is usually right............ you're doing the right thing love xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Sending more wheeeeeeeeeeeeks and friendly brrrrrrrrrrrrrr's from Velvet and Onyx and some little nose kisses from me xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>

I think an Xray would be best, because if you have an idea of what you are dealing with, then you can treat it accordingly.

I do hope she gets better soon Pollie it must be so stressful.

I must admit I have never heard of a pig dying from a UTI not to say it doesn't happen obviously, maybe ask on Guinea Lynx?

Poor Sweetie, hope you find out what is wrong and that she starts to feel better soon.

This is an awful rollercoaster for Sweetie and you - I'm just so sorry for you both. I hope you get some useful information today. Thinking of you both.

I am sorry to hear about Sweetie, too, I thought she might have felt better by now.
I also think an xray would be best, and Joanne is right, you CAN see the gas on an xray. I also think the pain can come from the gas, but I also agree that the mourning can contribute a lot to her state- like with us humans, we can feel physically very unwell (especially as concerns the digestive system) when we are very sad or depressed.

I keep fingers crossed for you.

Thanks very much, everyone. Sweetie is much better this morning and she has done heaps of poops overnight. She is much more active and overall seems really perky. Her bottom is a bit wet, though and she keep washing herself.

wow, this is great news, sound sso much better. I hope it will continue to improve! :laluot_15:

Wonderful news, Wow it has been a rollercoaster for you, hopefully we continue on the road to recovery! :).

Is she eating on her own yet?

I didn't go to the vets in the end, because Sweetie finds the visits so stressful and because of her delicate eating I don't want to put her off her routine.

She is still looking very bright and has eaten two romaine lettuce leaves on her own. I have given her some water first thing and then some pellet mash at midday. I am going to feed her some more pellet mash in a little while.

The strange thing is that she seems to be in pain after she eats. This was the first symptom I noticed on Tuesday. I think her gut will need more time to get back to normal.

She is still doing heap of poops, hence me thinking that this is what the pain is connected to. I have seen her wee and she is not in any discomfort. The wee was not stinky either, which is great news.

Her bottom is no longer damp.

Sweetie is still in some discomfort but I put some hay in earlier and she came to the bowl with the other pigs. It's the first time she has come to the hay bowl for a week so it is a significant milestone. She's looking bright and reasonably happy. She also seemed to eat for about the same amount of time as the other pigs although she did not manage to eat the same volume.

I am hoping she will pick up from here but I will keep a close eye on her behaviour and on her weight so that I can make sure it all goes smoothly. She is much more active today than she has been in previous days and she is walking much more normally albeit a bit tentatively.

This sounds a lot better, I am happy for you!
Feeling unwell after eating can be connected to gas / bloating in the tummy, so obviously the problem is not over yet, but she seems on the mend.

Yes, this is definitely my impression. I also read a very interesting comment by Laura that sometimes the inflammation of the bladder is worse than the infection. My impression is that the infection is now under control. Overall, we have had ups and downs, but at the end of every day she has been better than the previous day.

What a traumatic week! I can't quite believe everything that has happened!

I understand, it must have been horrible.
How is Sweetie today?

She is bright enough but she is losing weight, so I will have to step up the hand feeding again. I tried to step back yesterday because everytime I was about to feed her she was eating on her own and it seemed a shame to distract her from that.

that's the problem, you have to encourage her to eat for herself, but at the same time you have to make sure she does not lose too much weight!

I am so glad to hear that Sweetie has turned the corner, what a horrendous week you have had!

Keep on improving Sweetie!

Thanks, everyone. Sweetie enjoyed her pellet mash at lunchtime and seemed bright and cheerful. I am going to pick some grass for all of the pigs on the way home so that she has something to get her teeth into.

Sweetie is hiding under the hay and eating her grass. I am going to weigh her this evening to check that everything is OK and then give her her water and pellet mash. If she has lost weight during the day I can always give her a double helping of pellet mash.

Sweetie is still looking bright but her poops are soft. They are not actually runny but more mushy. I am wondering whether I fed her too much lettuce yesterday. It does not smell and as she finished antibiotics this morning I think it is unlikely to be an infection. I have fed her some recovery food as in my experience it is very good at re-balancing piggy stomachs. She seemed very perky when I put her back in the cage and ate some readigrass and went to have a drink of water. This is the first time I have seen her go to the water bottle in over a week.

I think it sounds promising. Hopefully her poops will firm up as she gets back to her normal eating. Well done to both of you. xx
