Sweetie has a UTI

Sweetie came out for veggie time: only the second time she has done this since she Treacle and Piggy Wiggin died. :)

She tucked into carrot straightaway: her favourite veggie :<> SHe has not eaten any carrot since the start of her illness although I offered it to her frequently. This is another milestone for her x)

Come on Sweetie! You are doing so well little girl and we all want you to be better xoxo

Ah! What amazing news, keep it up Girl! Your mummy is very proud and we're all rooten for you!

Onwards and upwards! YAY! X

Ah thank goodness. Well done Sweetie. :<>
I get so nervous everytime I read your posts I have to keep my fingers crossed.

Keep going Sweetie!

Well done Pollie, you've undoubtedly been her lifeline and her rock through all this.

It's mixed news about Sweetie. She has gained weight this morning, the soft poops have stopped and she's looking very bright any perky which is obviously all great news. However, she is having difficulty using her back legs and in particular jumping in and out of the hays trays. She is not in pain when she is passing urine and her urine is not smelly so I have assumed that the infection has gone and have stopped the antibiotics.

Could it be that she is still inflamed from the infection seven days after starting metacam? Or does the fact that she is not mobile indicate that there is definitely a stone in there somewhere? I would have thought that a stone would have given her too much pain to enable her appetite to recover so quickly and that inflammation is the most likely culprit. I left off her metacam yesterday lunchtime but gave her some last night as she was clearly uncomfortable.

Any thoughts? If it is possible that it is still inflammation from the UTI I would rather wait and see and she became extremely stressed after her vet visits. As she is currently regaining weight I would be happy to wait for a couple of days and then perhaps take her on Saturday or Monday, just so that she has a better chance of bouncing back before she goes through more stress and trauma.

How's Sweetie doing now? I hope she's still enthusiastic about eating and gaining weight. Sorry I can't give any useful advice about possible stones. It makes sense to try and get her stable though before putting her through the stress of a vet visit.

:)

I actually took Sweetie to the vets this morning as she is doing her hiccup thing again and I wanted to have her checked over. The vet felt her bladder and managed to get some urine out and tested it. It does not have any blood or protein which suggests that it is not an infection, but also suggests that it's not stones either. The vet couldn't feel any stones. I have some antibiotics on hand in case it is a UTI.

I am going to continue to weigh her daily, but I did not syringe feed her yesterday and she managed to maintain her weight.

One of the things that is difficult is that I can't tell whether she's just missing Piggy Wiggin and Treacle because the behaviour of the whole herd has changed since they died.

Glad to hear that it's not an infection or stones, but sorry to hear she's still not back to her old self.

Sounds good that she's now eating on her own, hope she can keep her weight up :)

I'm glad she's maintaining weight. That's a big step forward.

I feel a little awkward suggesting this as you've been through so much recently but are you considering taking on another pig at all? I just wonder whether the group would benefit from something new to focus on that would require an adjustment to the current dynamics.

xx

What flips is suggesting might be worth a thought.. on the other hand, though, adding a new piggy to the group can also be stressful (bonding phase) and make an already poorly piggy even worse - I think it all depends on the piggy. If it was a new piggy and there was love at first sight, then it would be great for Sweetie.

How is she today?

She seems more active today and is sitting in 'her' corner of the cage. I will try changing the cage around so that is feels different. Sweetie also went to the pellet bowl for the first time since she has been ill yesterday so she must be feeling somewhat better.

That sounds really encouraging, I'm so pleased to hear she seems to have turned that corner.

Hi Pollie :) I have been following this thread and send my love to Sweetie :) I can't help but think she may have a stone in her bladder or urethra?
Would it be worth an x-ray being carried out?
It's just a thought, can't help but think of how my Poppy was last year with cystitis and walking with difficulty and not having a good appetite etc. Poppy had a stone lodged in her urethra which was able to be removed without an op. :)

Sweetie has another UTI. I am treating her with metacam and baytril. She is off her food again but generally bright.

It's very disheartening and I think that I will need to have her x-rayed.

AW Bless - this is very hard for you i'm sure (and her of course).

Hope it clears fast. Poor girl.
xx

So sorry to hear that Sweetie has another UTI, I tend to agree with Tattyruncy, another infection so soon would ring stone alarm bells with me too so I would definitely press for an x-ray. Another thing to bear in mind is that Septrin is usually better for UTIs and on the plus side seems to be better tolerated by most piggies than Baytril.

Good luck and sending gentle hugs to Sweetie.
