Hi, I am new to the forum, and unfortunately here because of an unwell guinea. I can't get a vets appointment until Monday, so I was hoping someone would have some advice in the meantime. Hoggle has a swelling above his genitals. It is red and warm and doesn't look like a cyst, but I am not sure. He appears to be urinating and pooing fine and is eating and drinking happily as well. He doesn't seem out of sorts. I don't have a picture URL but I have set it as my avatar for now.

Thank you for reading and thanks in advance for any input.

Welcome to the forum.
Is the swelling what you can see in your profile picture? It looks quite sore, and definitely needs to be seen. How old is he? The fact it is red and warm suggests there may be some infection there.

You can add pictures directly into posts by the way. Which will make it clearer for people to see.
If you have photobucket you can upload your picture on to there and then insert the IMG code into the comment both on here, or if your picture is on your computer you can drag and drop it into the comment box.

Hi klee, thanks for the reply. Yes, it is the picture in my profile and I've now added another one here. Hoggle is about 2 years old. I'm hoping he will be ok until we can get him to the vet on Monday. It seems to be quite large and has come up quite suddenly.

Have you tried our vet locator at the top of the page? http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/pages/guinea-pig-vet-locator/
You can pop in your postcode and it will show the vets in your area as recommended by our members. You might find there is a vets that do consultations on a Saturday, I know my vets have a morning surgery. Sometimes vets will have a 24/7 phone number which you can ring for advice, or to book appointments (again this is something mine has).

Due to it coming up so suddenly and being quite big I would see if you are able to get him in sooner rather than later.
Has he been neutered in the past ?

I have popped your picture into my post, as it is only showing as a thumbnail on yours. If you want a large picture, when you pop the picture on it will show next to the file: as thumbnail, or full size image. If you click full size image it should show up.

Hopefully some more people will be along soon to give advice.

He has not been neutered as far as I'm aware, but he is a rescue and we got him when he was nearly a year old. I did try my usual vets, but will call a few others in the area in the morning to see if he can be seen quicker.

Thank you once again for the help.

That's very strange looking. It almost looks like it has pus inside. I hope you can get some good news from the vet for an easy treatment. Good luck and let us know how it went.

Ouch! If it's red and hot to the touch, I would wonder if it could be an abscess... they can come up quickly and are often hot/red (those are both signs of infections.) Hopefully the vet can either lance and drain or remove it for him, as it's probably painful!

It is very close to his penis which might mean he has an infection inside the place his penis is stored. Boys tend to collect all sorts of stuff in there and can cause problems. It is a good practice to inspect his penis on a fairly regular basis to check for any debris etc. When you go to the vet ask them to show you how to inspect him.

Hi all, thanks for your comments. I managed to get him seen on Saturday. We have antibiotics and instructions to go back tomorrow. The vets thinks it is an infection but didn't really elaborate on that. It may need to be lanced. He seems Ok himself, just hoping the antibiotics do their job!

Did he give you a macrobiotic as well as antibiotics can cause problems with the gut.

No, we just have baytril until I go back to the vet tomorrow. What is the best way to give him macrobiotics? I possibly have some at home, but I have a feeling it is a vitamin supplement rather than probiotic.
