I've just realised that my new boy Turnip has sort of lumps right at/above his nipples. Does anyone know what this could be? He also has a cut/bite, from failed bonding with George, lower down that doesn't seem to be healing all that well. I'm not sure if they could be related. it's two similar sized lumps ( the size of a 5p coin ) at each nipple and their under the skin.

Thanks, I plan to take him to the vets today when my mum gets home. I'm just worried if he'll need an operation, the vets around me aren't the best with small animals but there isn't anywhere else.

I have but none are very close, since I have to rely on my parents to take me there I can't really travel any great distance. Hopefully the diagnosis from my local vet won't be anything horrible.

Fingers crossed for Turnip. I have a boy called Peter who has fatty lumps, the vet was certain it was cancer given the sheer number of lumps when they looked inside but he just wanted to be a bit different. These days he's looking a bit misshapen but the lumps don't bother him at all and he doesn't need any medication

Just back from the vets. She says it's most likely to be hormonal and will hopefully go away so we have some baytril and loxicom. If it gets worse we'll have to look into cancer and operations but if all goes well (after the disastrous year of guinea pig related issues I've had it's about time something goes well! ) then he can be left alone, even if the lumps stay but don't bother him. She had a look at his never-healing bite as well and said the medicine should clear that up too.

Fingers very firmly crossed that the baytril helps.

Did your vet give you a probiotic to give with the baytril as it can be a little harsh on guinea pigs stomachs and cause soft poos? A probiotic will prevent this from happening.

@helen105281 Today it seemed that one of the lumps had almost gone away but there's also a sort of opening, it's not bloody or big just like a little fleshy hole. Is this anything to be worried about or is that just it going away?

I don't think that's normal with fatty lumps but could it be a burst cyst maybe? Please could you post a photo?

I am still thinking it may be a cyst, could you speak to your vet tomorrow and explain what has happened?

Possibly, though they could be unrelated, what did the vet think it was?

She thought it was likely to be a build up of hormones (or hopefully anyway, rather than cancer)

Ok, it may even just be harmless fatty lumps though these latest developments are a bit odd which is why I am thinking cyst.

could they just be fatty lumps and he's burst one himself by grooming or something? This is a bit of a puzzle! A tumour wouldn't burst like that, would it?

I have not heard of either a fatty lump or a tumour bursting.

@helen105281 Didn't make it to the vet yesterday but we went today. Both lumps have now burst, they are pus filled and the vet squeezed out some from the more recently burst one. He thinks it may be an infection type thing from when he was bitten by George (which is now healed thanks to the antibiotics). I'm to keep them cleaned out and stay on antibiotics and when all pus is gone (it nearly is) they should heal up and he'll be fine!

That makes sense, especially with him having been bitten. Glad you know what you are dealing with now.
