Can't believe I have seen yet another post on facebook of guinea pigs swimming - absolutely shocked how people can think that they're "having fun"

BBC Wales News said they're well looked after and having loads of fun going for a swim in response to somebody telling them that guinea pigs should absolutely not be going swimming.

Very bad reporting from the BBC indeed

:( Not the swimming pigs thing again. Shocking reporting off BBC and very irresponsible as people will try to copy :(

A friend tagged me in the video to go "this isn't actually okay, is it?" and she and I both had to comment that we couldn't even report the video as animal abuse, which it is. Shocking from both the BBC and very telling about what Facebook thinks is appropriate.

Woohoo result - they put this comment up a few minutes ago -

"Today we published a video of two guinea pigs swimming. The video was published in good faith, but caused offence to some of you. After speaking to the RSPCA this afternoon we have decided to delete the video. The BBC would never publish a video if we believed any animal was being cruelly treated."

Still quite disgusting that they won't acknowledge that it was wrong however.

Excellent, that is a result. Unfortunately up for far too long but at least taken down

yes, very poor apology. Complete click bait by the BBC unfortunately that is how social media works and even the BBC pander to it

Sorry I've not heard of this before, so is this people putting pigs in water to cool them down? Can they actually swim?!

It's piggies being put in water out their depth in a container they can't freely get out of. The pigs do swim but only as a matter of life and death and in a desperate attempt not to drown. Unfortunately there was a viral video last summer and it seems to have already started this year too :(

This thread is a bit old, but I wanted to tell my story. Those videos are a threat to the welfare of guinea pigs with inexperienced owners. I'm still traumatized from when I was 8, new guinea pig owner, and I got my first guinea pig. My guinea pigs name was Jedi, and i was doing research on what guinea pigs liked. I found several youtube videos showing that guinea pigs loved swimming. When my dad saw, he set up a mini swimming pool for him. Jedi was only there for 5 min, but he died from getting water in his lungs. I still feel so bad, and warn every new guinea pig owner I come across of it. I started getting new guinea pigs after recovering and doing more research, but it still hurts.
