Sorry if this has already been asked, I've searched but can't find it.

Anyway, I got diagnosed with swine flu yesterday, think it's because I've been run down with being upset about losing Phoebe and Lucy. Anyway, is it safe for me to be near my piggies and rabbits? Or can they catch it?

Any advice appreciated! x

I would be cautious however I believe there was a post a few weeks ago where a lady asked her vet if the guineas could catch it and they advised no only ferrets could?

Hope that's accurate as that's the last thing we need for there to be an epidemic there too!

I hope you feel better soon too. Not nice to be poorly. How does the swine flu feel?

I don't feel as bad as it seems that some people have been, just very achy and lethargic, and my head feels like it's full of goo. I keep going nauseous too. I got sent home from work yesterday as I work in a health centre, and can't risk spreading it.

I've been prescribed Tamiflu but not got it yet, going to see if I can recover without it.

thanks for that, I have to keep reminding my bf to cuddle them and tell them they're loved when he puts them to bed if I can't do it! :(|)

I would err on the side of caution and stay away from them as long as you have someone else to care for them, but that is just my opinion and i am probably overprotective and try to keep all the nasties to myself.

Hope you have a swift recovery and feel better soon

Sorry to hear love :(:(
You'll find tho that things like this are usually in chit chat :)

I'd be very careful about handling piggies or your OH :)
Don't breathe on them, wash your hands before and after.....if possible don't even contact their food either.
Wishing you luck.....do you think maybe it might be wiser tho to have the tamiflu tabs? I would hate to think you could get worse :{

Yeah, I heard they can't get it but Swine Flu isn't something that people know tons about.
There's a chance it could be wrong.

So I'd suggest staying away from them as much as you can.
Get someone else to feed them and so on.
If you can't do that, then maybe wear some rubber gloves when handling their hay and food?

You can wash them while you're wearing them, once you get them on. You can also get them on and off without having to touch them all over.
So if no one else can help out, I think that rubber gloves are better than bare hands.

I hope you get better soon.
All my friends have been falling ill with Swine Flu, It hasn't come to met yet *touch wood* but I hear that even the minor cases are nasty to have.
So get well soon and take care of yourself.

My mum had it quite mild but said the worst thing was the :)>>> rather than the nose problems! Her husband also had it very mild and my sister. I live about 200 miles away from them so have been safe - so far!

Anyway I really hope you are on the mend xx>>>

Sorry to hear you are ill, swine flu is just another mild strain of flu so don't worry too much about it. I don't think we know enough about any kind of flu (since it mutates so easily and so often) to say for definite if it is contagious to animals, thus it is advised that you do take extra caution when dealing with your animals whenver you are ill with cold/flu. Don't breathe on/near them, avoid cuddles until you are over the worst of it, wash your hands before and after handling and feeding etc.

If possible, do get someone else to take care of the piggies needs for you - mainly so you can get some much-needed rest yourself!

Sorry to hear you are unwell.
Make sure you rest properly
