Our three year old boar has been a bit off his food recently and lost some weight, and his poos were a bit squishy and pointed at one end. We've changed his diet and he's eating better now and the poos are back to normal, but this morning he had a complete panic attack when I went to give him his morning cuddle and later, when he'd calmed down, I noticed that his penis and testicles are very swollen. The penis isn't protruding, but there is a swelling above it almost the same size as his testicles. I plan to take him to the vet asap, but would like some advice...

I think vets is best place, he hasn't got anything stuck around his penis has he like hay? This can cause an infection. Does he penis pop out if you apply light pressure above it? That way you could check for anything restricting it.

Hi Sandy's mum

Some boars get a build-up of gunk all around the shaft of the penis. Normally the penis is only a few mm diameter but I have seen cases were the diameter, because of all the gunk surrounding it, has effectively increased to over 1cm and if this build-up has been happening for some time then the first you know of the problem is that it can appear as a lump under the skin when the penis is still in its sheath.

Given what you describe in view of his testicles also being swollen, I would advise a vets visit to very carefully extrude and clean the penis as there may also be hardened boar glue, hay, fur, cheesy stuff and infection etc that will need to be treated - Please do not attempt to do this yourself the first time as given what "might" be up there you could damage the fragile tissue. Hopefully, your vet will find that a bit of warm water/hibiscrub together with KY jelly or other lubricant will be all that is needed to gently remove the gunk but it may require patience and regular repeated soaking.

If the penis shaft or foreskin looks inflamed or damaged, then my vet recommends topical application of flamazine cream - it is a silver salt that is both anti-fungal and anti-bacterial and is something that bacteria cannot develop a resistance to - unlike antibiotics. If there is pus or an abcess present I would discuss with the vet whether a swab/culture should be taken and tested for sensitivity to antibiotics before automatically reaching for the baytril. Sadly we have increasing numbers of examples on the forum of the bugs causing "stinky willy", URI's and UTI's being baytril resistant (and swabs taken of my stinky willy boys have not necessarily resulted in the usual types of bugs you would expect).

Once he has been cleaned up and any inflammation/infection dealt with you can then start to clean him yourself as part of his regular care. "Stinky willy" is more common in boars that have a frilly foreskin (often called cauliflower willy) as it makes it easier for debris to get trapped and more difficult for the boar to clean himself.

Please feel free to print out my post and take it with you when you see the vet.

Thanks so much Pebble. He does have a frilly willy now you mention it (I have limited experience of GPs' penises!) I will certainly take your comments to the vet with me.

HI SM
Thank you for replying - I am pleased if I can have been of help.

Dealing with "stinky willy boys" can be quite daunting, especially if you are having to address this for the first time - I remember how I first felt...and have also seen how other forum members have first felt too !

If you ever want to have a more immediate and interactive Q&A telecon (rather than time-limited forum posts) I will happily give my number if you Pm me....
Hope that doesn't sound too stuffy?

Hi, he's back from the vet now. They wanted to anesthetize him and said he was infected as well as gunky. His wee had blood in it too, so he's on the antibiotics and painkillers and is feeling quite bruised but is tucking into dandelions so we think he'll be okay. Thanks for all your advice. I'll keep a better eye on him from now on.

I hope that he will feel a lot happier in himself soon!

Glad to hear he's been de-gunked!
What antibiotics has he been prescribed? Might be worth considering a pro-biotic such as avipro or fibreplex to help his digestion whilst he is on the anitbioitics.

Good luck - welcome to the wonderful world of frilly willy boars!

He's on Baytril, but the pro-biotic's a good idea. Thanks x
This Peter Gurney link is for protruding penis but it may be of help:- http://www.oginet.com/pgurney/penprot.htm
Very helpful, thank you. I'll give him a four-handed check over later.
