Hi all, Biscuit has a swollen pink toe and a dark ring around the top of her nail where it meets the skin. Any one come across this before?! Any ideas what I should do? She is not hopping /holding it up or lame on it and is herself and eating normally.

Thanks! :)

Is there something stuck on her toe (the black ring) or is it colouring of the skin? She may just have bumped it or caught it on something but personally i would have it checked by a vet just incase theres infection in the toe and it could spread to the rest of the foot. X

It sounds like she could have stumped her toe quite badly. If in doubt, please see a vet.

My girl Mabel did this. We (me and the vet) think she either caught it or stubbed it. She got given some anti inflammatory which helped the swelling and kept an eye on it for infection. The nail eventually fell off but she wasn't in any pain with it. I think it's from the black part is probably dead nail.

Her nail has fully grown back but it's a bit thicker than the others. Other than that it's perfectly fine now.

Make sure that there isn't a tiny hair or other foreign body wrapped somewhere and cutting off the circulation. This happened once to one of my hedgehogs- it was very hard to get off with manicure scissors, but luckily we caught it in time and her circulation returned to normal. If not, it's possible it's a stub or a nail got caught on something the pulled the toe awkwardly, causing some injury. That fact that she is eating/walking on it normally is good.

Thank you everyone, after checking Biscuit last night again and it has not improved so I've booked vet for tomorrow so that will get her sorted hopefully! :)

Biscuit has seen vet, it's a infection at the base of her nail. Got antibiotics for two weeks for her that should sort it :)

Smudge had a really swollen toe after an incident involving a bike! It was really complicated and it's only just gone down after 6 months!

I'm glad she's seen a vet and it's just an infection! I hope she makes a full recovery!
