Hi all,

Taking Thelma to the vet this afternoon, have noticed she has a wet bottom smelling of wee and a yellow discharge around her genitals. Have read that this could be symptom of cystitis. She always drinks excessively so this symptom is not particularly new, but have not heard her squeak. Could this mean its something else or could it still be a uti if she is not squeaking? She seems ok in herself and is still eating well. Although I think she has lost a little weight, maybe about 50g or 60g.

Any advice before I go to would be gratefully appreciated. Luckily I have an excellent vet who really knows a lot about guinea pigs.

Thanks x

sorry

sorry iam sure someone will be able to advise you, but good luck thinking of you both lots of love xx

Just seen this thread, would recomend taking a water sample to check for UTI. Hope everything goes ok for Thelma, sending healing vibes her way

Back from the vets, managed to get a sample before we left. The vet found blood and protein in it so it is cystitis :( Been given Baytril and Rimadyl for pain relief. Hopefully that will clear it. She did three wee's on the table while she was there, poor girl :(

I bought some cranberry juice, anyone know how much is ok to give her?
Also how can I keep her bottom clean? I'm going to give her bottom wash now and trim the hair, but i have a feeling its just going to get wet again soon after, and worried about further infection and fly strike. One more question they are on flax but have read its better to be on fleece or vet bed as it wicks away better?
Sorry for all the questions, never had a piggie with a UTI before :(

Fleece does wick water away and keeps the top layer dry (because it's made from plastic so fluid runs right through it) but you still need an absorbant layer underneath, glad you caught it tho hope she's better soon

Thank you. Is it better for the infection though or is natural bedding ok? Will probably order the liner now, will send you a pm :)

Cranberry juice - Holland and Barrett 100% natural I get the link when I get home. Encourage as much drinking of water and Cranberry as you can it's good to flush the bugs out.

Barley Water is good for soothing the bladder water - boil Barley Pearl for 30 - 45 mins - drain and then syringe the link to her - you could also put Cranberry Juice in the pearls or the liquid and feed to her.

How long is the course of Baytril? Some Uti's are difficult to shift and Septrin is normally the proferred Antibiotic for a Uti, if the Baytril doesn't clear the infection.

Not all pig's squeak with a UTI.

Thank you!
The vet did say Septrin was better but as it isnt licesned for UTI's she wants try Baytril first, she has given me a 14day course but wants to see her in 10days, obv if Thelma gets worse she wants to see her sooner.
Just not sure what to do about keeping her bottom dry and what to do with the bedding?

I don't change my bedding - I use Vetbed to be fair she shouldn't get re-infected well she's on Antibiotics but I would trim her skirt if it's long!
