Hi i have a teddy guinea pig and i heard they are common to have dry skin and was wondering if there is a way to prevent it like a cream? She cleans herself alot so not sure if thats because shes itchy thanks :)

Hi there are all sorts of things that will make a piggy scrach , fungus ,mites , lice , dry air,

Vetsect shampoo is probabaly one of the most respected and vet approved shampoo for things of this nature

Though lt may not be an idea to bath unless you are sure she has a problem.

She doesnt have a problem yet i dont think i just want something to keep her skin moist

I have used Imaverol for dry skin too, though it is primarily for fungal it is a natural emollient. I am not a fan of putting creams on as they can cause the skin to heat up and lead to fungal issues. The Imaverol is used as a dip and left on (not rinsed off)

On my skinnies I use a spray called Humilac which is good but I have not used it on my hairies so not sure how effective it would be.

I have used the gorgeous guinea melts on a teddy who had dry skin, followed by a conditioning shampoo. I recommend the gorgeous guineas website as a source of helpful information on skin problems

Yup Gorgeous Guineas is what I use on my Rex piggy, she has dry skin, I've never put any creams on her. I use Manuka & Neem, but if you ring GG they will advise you the best one to use :)

Thanks for your advise :) as she doesnt have a problem yet i will probably order some melts but only treat if she develops dry skin :) just thought if there was a way i would try to prevent her from getting dry skin in the first place. Just dont want a unhappy piggy.

The best way is not to bath her - she should smell like a piggy and nature should keep her skin as moist as it needs to be. Should her skin go dry/flaky, there will probably be an underlying issue, that would need medication to sort out. Otherwise, she should be fine!

Ahh yeah i dont bath my piggys unless necessary :) shes only 3 months old so ive never bathed her. I have to bath my long haired one very occasionally as she gets smelly eventually haha
