My wife feeds teff hay to our horses (a grass hay from Ethiopia, we think) and we were wondering if it's suitable for guinea pigs, either as food or bedding. I looked in the comprehensive hay guide (thank you for putting that together!) but didn't see it mentioned -- maybe it has another name in the UK?

Thanks
Aaron

Yes, teff is a grain from Ethiopia and is what injera is made with - a sort of bread/ pancake that is eaten with meals. I have no idea if the hay is suitable for guinea pigs though! I am sure someone will advise shortly

From a quick online search (not knowing what teff was), it seems it’s high in calcium so this would put it in the category with alfalfa and that would mean it is not suitable for guinea pigs as too much calcium can lead to bladder stones (most of which comes from feeding too many pellets and unfiltered drinking water).
