Terbinafine for ringworm?

Hi, I got my gps Cobweb and Barry a few weeks ago and they are such lovely happy piggies x) . I soon noticed Cobweb had a scabby bit on his nose and took him straight to an exotics vet that I was recommended by a local breeder.

The vet straight away diagnosed it as ringworm and gave me Terbinafine to treat Cobweb twice a day for a month. Has anyone else been given this? I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere on any forums! ?/

Anyway I've been giving it to cobweb for two and half weeks now along with manuka and neem lotion on the affected area and have regularly disinfected his cage and it doesn't seem to be getting any better - his nose is still very red and scabby, I know it will take a while for the hair to grow back but should there have been an improvement in his skin?

Also is there anything else I could add to my care routine to help him recover? I've read the forums and a lot of people mention canestan, should I use this instead of manuka and neem lotion? I'm so confused @)

I'm not sure it helps but the dr gave me terbinafine cream to treat an infection on my leg and all it did was occasionaly take the itching away. So now on tablets instead.

The kind I've been given is a medicine, the vet said it is a medicine they give to cats and is a weaker version of the stuff given to humans. It just doesn't seem to be having much effect on cobweb! :{ I'm thinking about trying some canestan on him!

Many members here use Canestan 1% to treat fungal infections successfully.

Terbafine is an oral antifungal that concentrates in the skin so should work fine for ringworm although I have personally have been prescribed griseofulvin for my piggies in the past.

For topical treatment of just a single patch on the nose, my vet has also prescribed surolan which worked very effectively.

There should be signs of healing after two and a half weeks so I would definitely stop the manuka and neem. However, before you try the canestan i would contact your vet to firstly let them know your piggie's progress (or lack of it) as they may wish to change the medication and secondly to make sure there will be no interaction with the terbafine you are still giving to your piggie.
