Done the morning rounds to find that Benji, my lovely 4 year old boy is peeing blood and Millie the 2 yo sow has what to my untrained eye are symptoms of a URI. The next two hours while I wait for my vets appt are going to be awful.

Benji looks like he has a small raw sore on his... ahem "little Benji" which might be where it's coming from, he's acting perfectly normal (although he doesn't look impressed that I'm trying to catch some pee- he's giving me stink eye from the bowl he's sitting in)

Millie however looks awful. She's snuffly, her eyes are a bit crusty and her nose looks like its been a bit snotty. There was no sign of this last night though.

Just sitting and hoping the snow we've got doesn't get worse before we leave.

Wish us all luck! :(

Oh No ! I hope everything gets sorted out ..... Sending healing vibes

Oh heavens @BertisKing so sorry you've got a poorly bunch this morning. Sending healing vibes to Benji and Millie and everything crossed you don't get more snow x

Oh heck, hope Benji wees soon and that it is an external problem...
I am sitting syringe feeding TeaCake sending vibes for your two

Healing vibes being sent your way. It's horrible when you find there's something wrong, and both of them too. I hope Benji simply cut himself and that it will soon be just fine, and I hope Millie can be easily helped with anti-biotics.
Fingers crossed for a simple solution for both, and a quick recovery xx

Oh crikey how horrible and it can never just be one of them can it? Still at least it happened while the vets are open and I hope they can start feeling better soon

All paws crossed here for you! xx

Fingers very firmly crossed, especially for poor Millie! Make sure that you also ask for a diuretic (like furosemide or frusol) and mucus-clearing bisolvon powder to help clear the airways as quickly as possible. That is in addition to the antibiotic.

Place a bowl of steaming water next to her cage and keep it changed to help ease the breathing. Start topping her up with syringe feed and water, as the need to breathe comes before the need to drink and thirdly the need to eat. That is why respiratory illnesses are appetite killers and why trying to clear the airways is so vital.

All the best! I hope that it is just the wound for Benji and that it can be sorted easily.

Sending love and vibes please let us know how vet goes x

Sending best wishes and good luck at the vets for both Benji and Millie. UTIs can be stubborn but are curable. I will be watching for updates.

Back from the vets- the good news is that Millie's ?URI looks like it may be an ulcer at the back of her eye.
The vet couldn't hear anything in her chest and her nose was clear of discharge, so he prescribed her some eye drops and septrin for 10 days, so I'll be keeping her indoors to see how she goes.

There's also no sign of bladder stones or an infection and yes, "Little Benji" looks a bit raw, so he's also on a course of Septrin and potassium citrate and will have an x ray on Wednesday if it doesn't start to clear.

Thank for all the vibes, hopefully it's not going to be as bad as I first thought. X

These piggies keep us on our toes. Hope both Benji and Millie respond well to the ABs.

Phew that's not as bad as expected which is always a good start. Hopefully everything clears up soon

Glad it's nothing too serious and hope your wee piggies recover soon.

Just a little update- Millie's eyes have cleared up beautifully, but cage mate Dotty is looking in a similar way- the only thing I can think is that some of the smaller bits of hay from their forage box have irritated them while they've been diving in it, but after another vet trip and a couple of days of drops for her she's looking much better.

Unfortunately Benji hasn't improved. His weight, which was stable until yesterday morning has dropped dramatically in 24 hours despite supplementary feeding and, although the sores have healed, is still peeing blood.
There's a visible thick white line on the inside of his penis (on top when you look down- it that where the urethra is? I couldn't find any anatomical diagrams last night) which looks like it could be bladder sludge that has formed a plug? Behind it its all red and swollen and he can't stand me touching it at all now. I've not noticed any chalky residue in his urine before.
Back to the vets later for an x ray :-(

What a nightmare for you and your piggies.
I m afraid I can't offer advice on the medical issues, but just wanted to wish you luck later at the vets.

Oh no, good luck, I hope they get to the root cause of Benji's condition. C'mon Benji, be strong xx

Could it be a sperm rod stuck? I'm not familiar with boar's bits as I only have had females & not sure if neutered boars can still get sperm rods @Wiebke @Abi_nurse as they might know more.

He is an entire boar. When I was trawling the Internet last night I only found one reference on another site to a sperm rod being wedged that far down so as to cause a blockage and the pig unable to remove it themselves, though the thought had crossed my mind. I'll have to see what the vet say later.

Ah well then yes I would ask the vet if it could be one, I am sure I have seen posts on here about a similar thing, don't try to remove it yourself though as it could be painful for him ;)

It sounds rather like sperm rod? Please have him seen by a vet! They can be very uncomfortable to outright painful, and cause infections if they are not being removed very, very carefully - and at this stage, you'd rather leave that to a vet!
Boar Care: Bits, Bums & Baths

There's no way I could even attempt to pull it out myself- it's nowhere near the end at all :( plus I would much rather have the vet be the bad guy!
He's booked in this evening with our cavy savvy vet so we'll see how we get on.
It's horrible because I've had to separate him from Rodney so I can monitor how much he's got going in and out, but they were lying touching through the bars when I left this morning

Oh no poor Rodney. Hope your Cavy vet can sort out his discomfort tonight x
