I recently took on a sow who was heavily pregnant. She gave birth and all babies are well. She is however not so good, she only has three legs and on the front leg on the opposite side to the one missing she has a terrible abcess in her foot which the vet believes is a pressure sore from being on an unsuitable surface previous to me having her, it was a wire floor. When she was heavily pregnant she could hardly walk when I got her. She is now on big fleecy beds and is happy and bright and moving around ok but her wound is just awful. She is on Baytril and I am washing the wound numerous times a day. It manages to completley heal over in a matter of hours and when ever I remove the scab it pours puss 8... I have spoken with the vet a number of times but been told to just contiue with what I am doing. Does anybody have any advice or tips on anything I could be using/doing to help her. She is being so so so brave but its breaking my heart because she cries when I clean it but lets me do it without a fuss. I really am worried sick about her, it looks like it will never heal:(

Awwwwwwww the poor thing :( I would take her to another vet for another opinion with regard to treatment :)
There is a list of vets on here people use who are guinea pig savvy, hopefully you will find one not too far from you :)
Alternatively give Vedra a call at the Cambridgeshire Cavy Trust 07721026401 to see if there is a rodentologist near to you who can take a look at her foot and give you some appropriate advice :)
I have a piggy with Bumblefoot that flares up and her foot is swollen and scabs over, it takes such a long time to heal, I am using anti-inflammatory pain relief for Poppy.
It may be your piggy will need some anti-inflammatory/pain relief. I am guessing your piggies foot must be painfull and swollen too.
Please let us know how you get on with her bless her :(

Zithromax is a very strong last ditch antibiotic that works well for really bad abscesses. It needs to be given with lots of probiotic and possibly some Critical Care or Science Recovery.

Ask your vet about it. He may want to contact guinea pig specialist vet Simon Maddock in Northampton for reference and more information:

Best of luck to your poor, poor girl!

Here is more about abscesses. You need to keep an abscess open for as long as possible in order to make sure that all the pus has come out in order to prevent another one. Admittedly, the sole of the food is the worst place to have one as it is very hard to prevent an open wound from getting dirty again. Abscesses are can be very stubborn and make several come backs.

Thank you for your replies. I have found a specialist who she's seeing tomorrow. I am very worried8... She really isnt a happy girl any more, I think she hates me as I'm constantly having to inject her and do horrible things:( Even soaking the foot I can no longer keep the wound open or get any more puss out but the foot is still more than twice the size it should be! Wish her luck 8...

it sounds like bumble foot, ive seen a sow with it really bad all the way up to her knee bone and when pressed pus comes out,if it is bumble foot its very hard to treat and some people just leave it if poss, daktarin spray is ment to help has its a type of fungal x

I've used Zithromax on a number of occasions with fantastic results.

It is actually better tolerated than baytril and I've never found it has upset the gut in the way some of the other antibiotics do. I had a piggie with an infected foot and the Zithromax cleared it up really quickly.

I will def ask the vet re Zithromax. Now its not quite as raw as it was it does look just like bumble foot, although I have only ever seen it on birds. She seems to be coping suprisingly well, its the more the treatment which seems to be making her unhappy. I bought some new toys yesterday and she was so happy and loving playing. Its just the fact that she already has the other front leg missing that worries me:(

some times what ever you do bumble foot does not go...if she seems happy and its not really bothering her i would just soak it every day and squeese out any puss and just spray it with daktarin long term antibiotics does more harm than good x

Would bumble foot cause the foot to be very swollen aswell? Just want to check daktarin spay, as for athletes foot? or is this a different type from the vets?

oh god defo ,it can spread right up the leg in bad cases, and can go twice the size,it is daktarin for humans as athlete's foot is fungal and bumble foot is a type of fungal too x

she will have bumble foot from the cage she used to be in with a mesh floor this can give them bumble foot

Thank you all so much you are all so much help and I feel a little bit better knowing what it could be and that there's things that can be done! She's had such a horrid little life so far having litter after litter I want her to have a few more years of happy retirement, and I'm already so attached to her!

Hi, i would recommend colloidial silver added to the salt bathing water or a drop of tea treeoil and lavender oil which kill germs and bacteria, when you have cleared the infection you could use the herb goldenseal to dry it up. if you know anyone who does reiki 2 ask them to use the symbol choku-rei and give hands on healing x
