I have been posting a lot but am in new territory with my piggies.

It has been a few weeks since my 2 boars were no longer able to live together. We built them a new C&C cage with metal bars between them (they each have a space that’s 2.5 feet by 4.8 feet). They have been fine minus some chewing on the bars. In fact, Griffin, my more dominant pig, has been more excitable and seemingly happier than before. Felix seemed his usual self. Popcorning and loud wheeking all the time. Until this morning.

When I went to feed them, they were both quiet. Usually Felix is loud when it’s time for breakfast (Griffin is usually quiet for breakfast but loud for dinner). Sometimes they seem more sleepy so I didn’t worry. Fed them both just fine. They both ate. All was good. As I was about to leave for work, I grabbed some water bottles from the freezer and wrapped them in towels to put in the cages as it’s going to be a really hot day and it’s something cold to lay against (I did this last summer and they liked it). When I put the water bottle in, I saw Felix run really quick. It seemed maybe out of fear but maybe was also the usual zoomies. I made sure the had full hay and water and continued getting ready. As I was leaving and not even really close to the cage Felix began to freak out. Not fun zoomies, and not running into an hidey. He ran full speed, head first, into the barrier between the two cages and didn’t it over and over again. Smashing his face. I was terrified. I picked him up and he continued to panic in my arms (I was on the ground so not to drop him). I got him sort of on his back (though not flat so I didn’t hurt his spine) and he immediately calmed down (this is usually a position he doesn’t like. I didn’t intentionally put him
In this position but it Kinda ended up that way). I rubbed his belly a bit and his breathing and heart rate calmed down. As I went to put him back in the cage, he immediately hit that high freak out mode. I managed to get him calm again, he had his face tucked firmly into the crook of my arm and just stayed there. I was able to put him back in the cage with a small freak out and run into the hidey. I stepped away to let him calm down and then went to check on him again and he freaked out again. Smashing full force into the wall again. I put a soft hidey in the way of that wall to make it harder to smash and he ran into that hidey and then didn’t move for 30 minutes (or longer). My partners suggested I put some pellets in the cage (his favourite). He didn’t react to them at all. I was very late for work and thought maybe If I leave, he’ll calm down. So I had to go 😔 (I really didn’t want to leave him alone).

All this time, Griffin was completely fine. He was sitting in his hidey. Came out to eat the pellets. Didn’t even seem to notice that Felix as freaking out.

The best way to explain Felix is it seemed like “blind fear”. Like he was so scared and panicked he couldn’t even see what he was doing or where he was going. Has anyone else had this happen? Should I be worried? We’re going to make a vet appointment. My partner didn’t see it but I explained it to him and he thinks it might be a vision issue but I honestly think it was just fear related not sight related...

I can’t help but wanted to assure you of my support.
Hopefully a behaviour expert will be along soon and can help you

I feel so sorry for you and Felix. Not sure what that's about so I hope you get some replies but my pigs don't feel secure just with hideys. I hang a towel or piece of fleece over each end of the cage, about a grids worth, so they feel an eagle couldn't swoop on them. And any open space in the cage has several hideys in it so they can go from a safe place to a safe place. I have a thermometer by their cage and don't let it get too noisy. Good luck.

That sounds really scary for you. I had a young boar who behaved a bit like that out of anger, he hated one of the boars who lived in an adjoining pen and used to throw himslef around whenever he saw him. When I realised what was going on I moved him and his cagemate so they weren't living side by side. I hope your boy will be okay and it was a one off event that spoked him.

It’s weird because they’ve always been in an open cage. We’ve had them for about 14 months and never had this. But he had 2 hidies and I added a third this morning. He’s never had a problem. They often like to hang out outside the hidies too. He’s been sleeping on a new pee pad I made him out in the open all week and loving it. But I’ll try that tonight and see how it goes.

I don’t think it’s an issue with the other pig because they were very well bonded until teen hormones made Felix try and be the dominant one. They cannot stand to be apart (but when they are, they do not act like that. They usually wheek for each other. Like they’re confirming each Is okay.)

It’s literally a behaviour I’ve never seen before. In any animal actually. It wasn’t like he wasn’t so sure something was chasing him and couldn’t think about hiding or about walls or Anything. He was just running full force!

Yes just thought I'd add that in case it helped but I've not seen a pig do that so won't be the best person to give advice. When my boar was waiting after his snip housed alone, he climbed out of a c and c to get to the ladies. And as a child we had a male rabbit climb a high fence to escape, we thought to mate. Could it be that... ?

you it’s a good suggestion and definitely worth trying.

I doubt it’s to mate. We have no females lol. But also he wasn’t climbing at all. Like just running for his life and unaware that there was a wall that he was repeatedly smashing into.

Poor boy :mal:

Awww how awful for you to witness that.... poor little thing.... hope you get to the bottom of it soon x

your boys just need time to settle in maybe when feeding out food close to the knees who wont come out and slowly move it further away from him so he has to come out do this over a few days each day move the food further away

Thanks for your response, but that’s definitely not my concern and not the problem. Never had trouble with them coming out for food. This is a much more serious and concerning issue than that. I’m concerned he is going to harm himself

I have to start by saying I am in no way and expert, but what I have noticed is that some guinea pigs seem particularly sensitive to certain smells.
Lucy is the one in our house who was completely freaking out one day and I couldn't work out why.
A cat was sat by our back door which is close to the pigs cage. It is completely covered with a mesh security door so the cat couldn't get in, but I think Lucy smelt it and felt threatended.
When i open a window in their room she is always the first to stick her nose in the air and start sniffing.
So maybe it was a new or strange smell that caused your boy to panic?
Could the towel you wrapped the bottle in been wrapped around something strange (strange to piggies)?
Were you wearing a different scent than normal?

I think if it was a visual issue you would have seen other signs, and it sounds more like something caused him to panic.
I hope you can sort it out - you sound like a wonderful and very caring owner.

Thank you for your reply. I’m thinking about the different smells. I actually wrapped the water bottles in scrap fleece from their old bedding. So I don’t think its that. We did sew some new fleece bedding this weekend and changed it out on Monday. But the bedding was washed 3 times with the scent free/dye free soap we always use to wash their bedding. I also sewed new pee pads that I put in the cage last night. But those were again made from scraps of their old bedding. I sewed one on Sunday And he loved that one. He decided it was a bed and was happily sleeping on it (out side of a hidey) pretty much since I put it in there. And I don’t wear perfume or scents. Never have. Just my usual deodorant same every day. Also there are no other animals in the house.

One thing I thought was my partner forgot to close the balcony doors last night before bed (we have screens) though. I usually have them open when we’re awake and home but close them when we’re not around. Though he was okay for the first 2 hours of the morning that I was around and getting ready. I considered that maybe he heard the birds outside, but we have another window closer to their cage that stays open 24/7 (angle and size of window, nothing could get in and again, a screen). The sound of birds has never phased them.

I’m so concerned. I’m itching to go home to check on him and see If he’s okay. I’ve been hopeful that my house being quiet and empty would help him calm down.

Thank you for your words of encouragement! I hope it was a one off and that he’s okay. We’re booking a vet appointment either way but will rush to the animal hospital if he’s still acting like that or anything else concerning when I get home.

Just wondering about mites or lice or something? I got frozen shoulders and couldn't scratch my back and ever since then I scratch my pigs' backs because I think it must drive them mad not being able to itch. They can catch things from hay can't they, so could develop as a sudden problem.

Oh that’s a good thought. I suppose it could be. I’ll check signs of mites and stuff like that! Thank you!

God just read year post. Hope your little boy will be ok.. calming piggie purrs to you both. X

Everyone! thank you so much for all your replies and well wishes. I returned home to find Felix in the exact same position in the hidey (when he's scared he goes to the top of the hidey (a hand made cushey fleece cube) and snuggles in to the seam, a really unique thing. He was exactly as i left him. no food had been eaten (including some of his breakfast veggies and no pellets). i was terrified he was sick or worse. so i gently tilted the hidey to make sure he moved. he came out seeming a little off. he was walking like his legs may have been stiff (which if he hadn't moved, would make sense) but he didn't freak out like earlier. he ran to his other hidey (just an open wooden one) at the same pace he normally does when hes startled but not scared. i tried to hand him some pellets and he smelled my hand but pulled away like he was scared. i put them on the ground near him and he didn't eat them. but then he came out of his hidey. he was moving in kind of a jerky, skittish motion but began picking up some of the veggies from this morning. i handed him a piece of lettuce and he took it from my hands and ate it. he was starting to move like his usual self. i went to the fridge and when i openned it he wheeked and then happily took some cucumber from my hands. so he seems okay. i'm still very concerned at what happened earlier and i'm really worried he spent all day in that fleece hidey (its an extremely hot day and the hidey is really warm. i usually only use those in the winter but put it in this morning as cushion to prevent him from slamming into the wall). i booked a vet appointment for the earliest appointment i could get (next week) and will still take him for a check up. if it happens again we plan to rush him to animal emerg.
but for now, he seems almost back to normal. maybe a bit more skittish than normal. thank you again all so much for your help! i spent the entire day in a panic and even being able to talk to people who understand the fear (instead of my boss who doens't like animals) really helped me. Thank you all again!

This must have been such a scary situation for you! I'm glad he seems to be a little better now. Scarlet does something similar but to a lesser extent when she smells parsley. She absolutely hates it and gets all panicked when she smells it. She tried to climb the hanging ball of hay to get out of the cage so that she wouldn't be near it....That's the closest thing it sounds to me, but it doesn't sound like you had any unusual smells around. Hope he is okay!

Omg that's crazy! i did feed Felix parsley this morning but he loves it. its one of his favourite things to eat! so i hope/assume that wasn't what caused the reaction!

Really glad to hear. I'm kinda a new piggie here too. Everyones support is amazing. Hope year little boy is through the worst. Got everything crossed for you. Jess. 🌻

Scarlet used to like parsley too but one day she decided she didn't and gets this TERRIFIED look on her face the moment she smells it. I think she'd be capable of potentially hurting herself from trying to get away from it. Hope he's doing better today!

He's doing much better. almost back to himself. still a bit more skittish than normal but understandable given how he was feeling yesterday.

Glad to hear he is feeling better today.
Thanks for taking the time to let us know too.

Well this morning things have changed. he is refusing to eat. he showed minor interest in the food for a moment but then refused to eat it and is no longer showing any interest. i put his favourites in front of his face and he wont touch them. usually if i put my hand in the cage or near his face hell sniff to see if there's food. nothing. i couldn't get a vet appointment until Thursday but i'm going to see if he'll eat while i'm at work for the day and if he doesn't I'm going to find a pet hospital that does emerg visits. :( i have no idea whats happening with him. last night he was almost his normal self. today, a while different pig.

Sorry to hear Felix is still not right. Hope you can get an emergency place to take him. It's probably medical but just another random thought - he's not depressed and scared being on his own? When I had to separate 2 pigs because their fighting was too bad, one of them was content and one was totally neurotic and lunged towards the other one through the cage divider, she can't handle any time alone and even if she needs a vet visit she needs guinea pig company with her..

I was wondering how Felix is doing now? Sounded very difficult to know what was wrong with him. Hope things are better.
