Lez

went to our pets at home tonight. they had the most useless staff ever on.

there were some gorgeous piggles in, i almost came home with another 2! if the bf wasnt there being strict i would have.

anyhoo, i was really sad to see that the piggles had no hay and no food whatsoever. they were all snuffling around in the shavings, picking through the little bits of hay on the floor, it was so sad to see, but i was too much of a wimp to say anything ::) :'(

anyhoo we got to the till and paid and i was still sad about the way the piggles were in. so my friend walked off after paying. i looked across the shop to see her opening her new bag of hay she had just bought and putting a massive hand ful in their pen. as she did so there was a massive really loud "WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK" from all the piggies as she put it in the cage. so after telling them to shush and not give her away ( ;D) we hurried out of the shop. feeling much better knowing that the piggles now had hay.

as i was too much of a wimp to say anything, I'm tempted to write to P@H about the mess the piggies were in today.

there was also a giant bunny in one f their tiny rescue pens. the roof of the pen was too short for the poor bunny so he was hunched over :'(

my P@H is usually pretty good, but tonight, the staff that were on didnt seem to give a and were just wandering round doing all :tickedoff:

Get on to head office Lez, they are very good. Tell them you will keep an eye on the situation and if it doesn't improve you'll take it further!

Good luck, and thank god you gave them hay!

it was my friend who gave them the hay. she had bought a huge bag lol

they sounded so happy when she gave them the hay

I would have probably taken one off the shelves and given it to the piggies

Best thing to do is to actually tell a member of staff what the problem is - and if they don't act on it, THEN complain to head office.

I like your attitude! I'd probably do the same.

Surely only if you'd asked the staff to do it and they'd said 'no' though? ;)

Get on to head office! TO be honest though, I am sick of dealing with P@H. They send back emails saying how they will change things and nothing changes. I'm not going to bother anymore. I reckon I spend a good 50 quid a month in there, but I wont anymore. They only care about profits, not animals, and should be banned from selling live animals altogether.

I had another sick experience with P@H today, when a member of staff bought a pig into the vets where I do work experience, but I am not allowed to tell you because of patient confidentiality. :'(

i will be emailing head office tomorrow, i have the times etc i was in the shop that i can send too

ive just sent an email, will let you all know if i get a reply. i went on a bit of a rant lol

People who work there should be experienced pet owners or animal specialists IMO

There should be an expert for each type of animal kept there to advise people and assure decent living conditions.

i agree.

they just seem to take on anyone they can get ::) there is a bigger need for people who know what they are doing in that shop :tickedoff:

they were advertising for staff a few weeks ago but i didnt apply cos I'm happy with the job i have

I refuse to go in there now as I find it quite upsetting.
I am the same with pet shops. If they sell animals I don't go in there as I just want to make a scene and take them all home with me.

our P@H usually isnt that bad which is why i still go there it is usually ok. but the state they were in last night just shocked me, as usually the piggies in our P@H look well looked after. last night they were anything but :tickedoff:

Unfortunately it will be down the staff working on the day! I wish they would train their staff better :tickedoff:

Its criminal

All other people that come into contact with animals need lots of qualification and years of training

Why not pet shop workers ?

tbh, it's not that difficult to work with animals in a non-pet shop setting either.

Consider the RSPCA inspectors - they are mostly trained in animal legislation, not animal husbandry. Which is why even they sometimes get it wrong (allegedly they drowned a tortoise because they thought it was a terrapin)...

With regards to pet shops, current laws are that only one member of staff needs to hold the PCT Pet Store Management qualification. Licensing conditions say that written advice should be available (i.e. caresheets) - but makes no mention of staff being specifically trained.

So if the animal welfare legislation were bolstered to include these sorts of things, then maybe pet shops would improve. It's sad though, the Duty of Care doesn't even extend to shops - only pet owners. So they don't even have to abide by that :-\

Though at least P@H try to implement a training scheme (which unfortunately depends on there being experienced staff members in store and also depends on the person being trained actually wanting to learn ::) so it doesn't exactly cut it really)...

It's ridiculous the number of shops/garden centres I have been in where they don't even know that they should have hay at all....poor things munching on muesli and hay :-\ I wonder what will happen once the Code of Practices for G.Pigs come out?

Think i need to apply and work at ours, then i know they will be well cared for, well at least on my shift.

There brings 2 problems though, i would want to take them all home with me ;D and i wouldn't like to sell a guinea pig to someone who's going to give it to their young child (eg. 2-3years old) and have no experience or interest themselves. The child is too young to understand and will soon get bored and the parents may forget about the poor thing out in the garden and not know how to care for it anyway, would break my heart :'(

But yes, something needs to be done now

Secondary legislation regulating pet shops is coming in next year (hopefully) http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/welfare/act/petsales_fairs.htm

It's ridiculous that people can sell animals and "advise" with no official qualification, particularly if they go by some of the rubbish the shops sell.

The day pet shops stop selling animals altogether will be the day they get a round of applause from me.

I think the sale of any animal via a third party i.e. pet shops, garden centres etc should be banned. Breeding should be left to those that are responsible and reputable and genuinely care for what they breed.

I think even breeding should be banned for a while, until the numbers of guinea pigs in rescues goes down!

I applied for a couple of jobs at P@H and both times I was told I was over qualifed.
National Certificate and Diploma in Animal Care along with lifetime experience of looking after small rodents and dogs, to them is over qualified.
Bascially they want someone who is fresh out of school with no animal care experience so they can train them, to their standards and not know any difference.

They wouldnt want anyone with qualifications who might ask for a pay rise, or object to the advice they gove to customers. I think having somebody knowledgable working for them is a big risk for them.

If you banned the sale of animals in pet shops the numbers being bred would be reduced and those being bought on a whim would also never happen as you can't buy on a whim if you have to seek out a breeder! I would say that the % of GP's bred by experienced responsible people is very small compared to those bred by mass producers or 'accidental' litters. They did research this due to the dog over population and only 12% of dogs bred are by responsible breeders.
