Since we have had our piggies we have been buying big packets of hay from scats town and country but we noticed recently that it had mites in and all our girls got statice lice, weve looked in a few other places that we know of but all seem to have little mites crawling in the bags sooo.....

I was wondering where everyone else got their hay from?

xx

I get Oxbow Western Timothy hay as it comes from the US it doesn't have any static lice in it as it is sterile according to EU requirements :)

hey there! It might be worth trying to find your local equine centre. Horsey people can be very funny about there hay and its usually good quality and fresh (just dont tell them your going to use it for guinea pigs, say you need only a little as a sample instead, if you tell them its for piggys they often give you the worst left overs! ¬_¬)

Or, as mentioned above get it online. Lots of people on the forum go down that route. :D

ooo thanks I never thought of equine places, i have no idea if we have one in bristol somewhere.
Where do you buy your online hay from?

I'm pretty sure we have 1 in swindon so you must have one in bristol! The pet shop i get my hay from buys it from equine place and bags it up into suitable sized bags for small animals (I never get anything else from that shop though, I hate buying from shops that sell animals, however i found online suppliers deliveries to be completly impractical for me.). If you have the space getting a bale is usually cheaper, but i really dont! (Just a note, even though the piggies love this hay, and its nice and green i also do get timothy hay and reedi grass for them as a treat because these are better quality.)

I'm sure someone else can advise where they get theres online. :)

hiya...
do you have a farm or horse feed shop local...?
i have a farm close by me and i get large bales of hay from there and its lovely stuff... long stands and green...
and it rarely has the big sticks or rocks or feathers in it... and has hardly any dust in it....
