Hello, can anyone tell me whats on my sow body. Okay. I notice there something on her body last night when i rubbed her body. Last night, it looks like dandruff patch on a scalp and i went on the internet. They said maybe its a dry skin and try to put vaseline which i did on the spot. And this morning when i checked it again, it become like in the picture. I dont know what happened maybe it fell off. But to me it looks like its bleeding a bit. Please help me. First of all I'm very sure its not a mite nor lice because i have been monitoring my sow and she didnt scratch her body every few seconds. She eats a lot today even ask for more food and very very hyper this past few days. Can someone please tell me what this is? And should i continue with the vaseline or try to put iodine?.

Thank youuuu

Hi and welcome!

Poor girl - that looks sore, so she has been biting or scratching!
Please have your sow seen by a vet. it is definitely NOT dry skin! :(

Do not home treat on spec as it makes any diagnosis for a vet a lot more difficult. It is either mange mites or fungal (not necessarily ringworm), but they need different treatment, so you want to be absolutely sure about what you need treating for. Mange mites do not always come with increased itching, so you cannot just go by that. Also be aware that cheap broad spectrum shop products are too low dosed to cure an acute attack of mange mites.

Whether it is fungal or mites, you need to treat all guinea pigs in contact, and you need to complete a full course of of several rounds of treatment.

As we have got members from all over the world, we find it very helpful in being able to tailor any advice to what is available and relevant where you are instead of keeping things general. Please click on your username on top, then go to personal details and scroll down to location to add your country, state/province or UK county to your details.
We have got a recommended UK vets locator on the top bar, but may provide a link to a list of recommended piggy savvy vets in some other countries if wished.

Hello

Looks like mites or fungal. Definitely needs a vets visit as soon as possible in case it spreads.. You don't always see scratching with mites or fungal

Do not use Vaseline or Iodine please, it will need the correct treatment

Where are you based? we can hopefully recommend a vet for you.

Welcome to the forum, hopefully you can get your piggy all sorted out as soon as possible

My original sow Gertie had something very similar years ago and it was from scratching and biting at herself. She had mange mites when she arrived, though we have always suspected she had fungal too, but back then we didn't know what we do now. Definitely needs to see a vet for a proper diagnosis.

If your vet is not all that piggy savvy, you can copy/print out these links here, which are from a US site. Their brands should be easier available in Malaysia than UK brands.
Guinea Lynx :: Mange Mites
Guinea Lynx :: Fungus
Gorgeous Guineas Identification

You may also want to take these lists with you whenever you see a vet that is not experienced with guinea pigs and small rodents to double check before you leave the clinic:
Safe medications: Guinea Lynx :: Medications
Dangerous medications: Guinea Lynx :: Dangerous Medications (also add convenia antibiotic)
