My fiance is terribly allergic to their hay. At least, we think it's their hay.

We are both engineers, so we are able to work from home during this pandemic. We've been spending almost all of our time in the house because of this and it's very hard on him.

He's waking up every morning with horrible sniffles. I hear him itching his throat constantly. He's just miserable.

He's also the kind of guy who will rarely take medicine unless he's in the hospital.

I'm not sure what we can try.

I got a big Levoit air purifier and it's been running full blast 24/7 and he's still suffering.

Are there any suggestions for what I can do?

As a side note, there's a very good chance Perl is pregnant. I don't know how long she was up for adoption but I do know I adopted her and her very young daughter at the same time. It's possible she was pregnant again before she went up for adoption and they missed it? She's gaining weight, specifically at the sides of her abdomen. I've devoured all kinds of information and started ordering for my emergency kit and other supplies. I hope I'm wrong and I end up never needing them.

This whole situation right now is a small nightmare.

I’m so sorry you find yourself in this situation. When you adopted her, did they tell you she’d been with boars? When did you adopt her? I’d ask them when she was last with a boar then guesstimate.

As for the hay, would your fiancé not be willing to try an allergy tablet - once a day? And have you tried different types of hay as well?

i recommend getting dust extracted hay if you can. even if he turned out not to be allergic to their hay this is better for them in general. maybe that will help

I think I'm allergic to my actual pigs! 😳. If they snuggle up to my neck or if I kiss them, my skin goes pink and blotchy for a few hours. And I sneeze a lot when cleaning them out, sometimes it makes me cough too and I get short of breath. Luckily they are in an outdoor hutch. Their hay and shavings are all dust extracted and I've tried different brands too.

My OH is allergic to their hay, we have found different brands are much worse than others. Timothy hay seems to cause more of a reaction than meadow. Mine love Timothy so I only feed it when he's outside in his workshop by the time he comes back in they will have eaten all the handful I give them.

Aww sorry to hear that.. I suffer with hayfever and can always smell the hay... I find taking just 1 anti histamine does help... also I try not to breathe when getting the hay out the tub... quite difficult I can tell you.. it makes me wheezy and sneeze loads but soon passes.. try a different hay as suggested.. good luck!

Is there any chance you could buy an outside hutch? I am allergic to hay too. I take an antihistamine at teatime. It works quite well as any drowsiness is overnight so wake up feeling fine

I'm allergic to some piggies but not others. At the moment I'm not allergic to the guineas I have, but have previously taken an antihistamine to cope. Would be be willing to try that?

Thanks so much for your support guys.

Good news: I no longer think Perl is pregnant. I feel like she hasn't had a life full of good food and packed on weight. But she's actually kind of become a normal piggie pear now that she isn't eating so much like there will never be food in her vicinity again.

And as far as the allergies go... We just keep trying. Now I change the hay outside and we switched to orchard meadow. Hopefully this helps.
