Theyre not eating their food

My lads who i recently got off someone else have been on tesco basics guinea pig muesli for a bout a year... i notice they hardly eat any of it, i bought some pets at home muesli before i noticed this and hav put a little bit in with their tesco food but they still havnt eaten it, they are very picky!
I bought a 5kg bag of it, will pets at home let me return it as they arent eating it, or should i try them with it a bit longer as they havnt really eaten much of it yet... Dont know what to do bit worried they arent getting the nutrion they need... :S
 
I doubt they'd let you return it if its open. I feed mine on a complete pellet food called Wagg Optimum, all my lot and rescues eat it, if they are being picky I mis some dried ready grass into it which more or less leaves empty feed bowls in the morning.

I find theres more selective feeding with a museli mix food then the Optimum :)
 
I use burgess excell nuggets with a mix of Wagg crunch through it. I dont think you could return the bag if its been opened. Not unless there is a guarantee on it that if your piggies dont like it they will refund. Are you keeping an eye on their weight just to make sure they are not losing any. Good luck.
 
Your totaly right becklen :)) I used to feed supa guinea but I had tons left over ! Every week most of their food would be thrown out and I was only using about half or less of a bag, an expensive bag. I switched to supa guinea excel and my two love it :)) They cant select what food they want as it all looks and tastes the same. I will always buy pellets now and not muesli :))

mine are eating wilkinsons guinea pig food but i give them lots of fresh veg and hay which they eat more then the dried food
 
you may feel "mean" doing this but if you give you pigs 1/8th (so, a VERY small amount that will just cover the base of a hearthware bowl) of a bowl of museli mix you'll be able to see better how much or little they're eating and could prevent selective eating.

Chances are, if you're not supplimenting your pigs diet with lots of veggies and hay (UNLIMITED), if they weren't eating their pellets they'd be steadily losing weight since pellets contain quite a bit of fat compared to the rest of their diets.

Some piggies don't actually eat a lot of pellets (or museli) and if you're giving them a huge bowlful it won't really be too obvious unless you abandon the bowl for a few days.
 
I wish mine would eat nuggets! They are on gerty and I mix in the excel nuggets both types and they leave them. I'm now trying the wagg nuggets. My last resort will be cavy cuisine.
How long does it take for them to eat the nuggets or shall I be mean and take the gerty away altogether or will this be to bad on there tummies?

It says on the muesli bag "we are sure your animal will like this food. If your unhappy with the product please return it for a refund" soo i think maybe i can..

Ive only had them a few days, and they seem to be a v healthy weight :) But i will keep my eye on them, they get unlimited hay, and i feed them a bowl full of veg a day, which i need to ask a qustion about. I gave them carrot, cucumber, runner beans and broccli they seem to like the broccli best, the carrots are second best, they eat bits of the beans and none of the cucumber... and ususlly the bowl still has lots of carrot left in it... fussy or what! Just bought some parsley so hopefully they will eat that and i wont be wasting any more money :)p
 
Have a google search on Ca:Ph ratios with guinea pigs. Generally to keep it balanced well and reduce the likelihood of bladder stones you should make lettuce the main staple of their diet and everything else is just a salad dressing.

Feed small amounts of carrot; it's high in Vitamin A and sugar.

I'm sure Teadragon forgot to add not Iceburg lettuce though :)
 
Cheers...So what should i be feeding them, everyone says different things...
