I was just checking up on my pigs last night and one of them is really fluffy. When i picked her up i realised she's lost quite a bit of weight and i could feel her haunches and spine.

She does eat a normal amount but is always squeaking for food when i go in there.

At the moment weekly i feed my pigs
spinach
carrot
apple
celery
cabbage
kale
they also have hay and dry food all the time. Am i feeding them the wrong things? or is there anything else i can try to try and fatten her up a bit?

thanks in advance

You'll need to weigh daily for a while to track if it is active weight loss and if so, how much she is losing. It's also a wise idea to get into the habit of weighing weekly to catch weight loss like this early. How old is this piggie? Has she any other symptoms? What dry food do you feed?

The diet does need altering. Almost all the veg you are giving are high in calcium, and these veg should be limited to 1 or 2 of these just once or twice a week. Have a look at some of the current threads in the Food section for ideas on what to feed and how often.

hi

thanks for the reply, she's about 2/3 years old (adopted her so not exactly sure of age). Dry food is tescos own brand (not value). i did try them on cavy cuisine but they just weed in it.

thanks for the advice on finding out what to feed her and i'll start weighing her too

Maybe try a different dry complete food as she could just have gone off it (fussy piggies). If you contact both burgess & the people that make science selective (via their websites) they will send you free samples. Just say you have a piggie loosing weight and you want to try her on your food! you should get a package within 2/3 days with a quite large trial sample (burgess is 250gms and the science selective one is 350gms)

Good luck I'm sure she'll be fine x
