So we got a couple of young Guinea Pigs to replace our "stolen" one (see other post for details) they seem to be getting along well with our original one. But all 3 are showing signs of Mites, plus our original one has over the last couple of days been struggling to walk, almost like being drunk, except there is no singing lol,

So we took them to the Vets today and it seems they have mites, so have been given Xeno 50 spot on and Sulfatrim for our Original Piggy and been told to increase Vitamin C

Our Original Piggy looks very unwell so I hope this does the trick. What I didn't ask is if it doesn't work, what happens next, do I have to pay for more treatment?
What do you think?

Hi!

I assume that your original guinea pig is being treated for an ear infection. You should hopefully see an improvement over the next week. Please contact your vet again if things don't get better or asap as an emergency if things suddenly get worse.

Weigh your piggy daily at the same time in the feeding cycle and top it up with syringe feed and water to make sure that it gets enough food to have the strength to fight its illness. Your good care is as important as any vet care.
Please take the time to carefully read our guide; it tells you exactly what you can do with what you have at home (like pellets). The guide also tells you where you can source vitamin C. Please do not add anything to the water. Guinea pigs will drink noticeably less and you cannot control the intake. None of these things are expensive, but they can make a real difference. Cheap kitchen scales from the supermarket are perfectly fine for monitoring the weight changes.

Make sure that your guinea pigs are safely indoors in this weather.

Thank you for your reply and helpful information. Its all appreciated. And a lot of it we followed yesterday evening.

But sadly, no, very very sadly, our original piggy "Smallie" passed away last night. Its very hard to accept it. Who would of thought that we would all get upset over the death of a simple Rodant. Its changed my views completely. The 6.5 years we have had her have meant so much and its hard to know we have lost her. They are not simple "pets" but almost another person who is part of the family. Knowing how we feel now over loosing her, I'm so glad we don't have a cat or dog, because the bond and loss I can only imagine would be unbearable.

I really believe that when a Guinea Pig looses its companion (Smallie lost hers 4 weeks ago, see seperate post) that they really feel the loss, because she was never the same, something in her died when we lost "Biggie" the spark had gone and I think this was the trigger to her going down hill.

We will now concentrate on the 2 younger piggys, who we only got to keep Smallie happy, but thats now changed. But at least we have them.

We are going to bury Smallie in the garden later today, so thats not going to be easy for any of us.

I am very sorry for your loss and that Smallie hasn't made it. :(

You are welcome to post a tribute to her in our Rainbow Bridge section if and whenever you wish to. A number of our members finds that it helps them with their grieving process to set a memorial to a much beloved pet.

As guinea pigs have such huge personalities and cute appeal, many first time owners are surprised just how much they burrow into your heart. As we are free to give our pets our full, unquestioned love and care without any strings attached, they can really get to us!

All the best for your remaining two girls. You can find lots of useful and interesting information at the top of our various Care sections if you have time to browse, but you are always welcome to ask any questions along the way.

Thank you for your kind words, it was very nice to read.

Yes, first time owners and you are spot on with what you say.
We don't have a bond yet with the new guinea pigs, but that will come with time and things will be good again.

I will definately do a lot of reading and get to know more about these wonderful pets.

Thanks again, Dave

You may find this collection of threads here helpful in settling and making friends with your newbies. It will also help to understand them more, and it is a good to start to learn more as you go along: New Owners' " How To" Starter Kit

Thank you, that looks like a good starting place and quite a lot of useful information. I'll go and get a Cuppa and have a read!
