We lost our Roger very suddenly recently and opted to have a post mortem done. The vet found that he had a thyroid problem, that his thyroid gland was hypoplastic. I asked the vet what could have caused it and she said it could be genetic but that there could be a link between eating a lot of cabbage and a thyroid problem. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of this? Thank you.

I've had thyroid problems myself but was never told to avoid cabbage. Seriously though, guinea pigs shouldn't be given too much cabbage anyway. The most mine get it half a big leaf between 3 or 4 of them & that's only when we have cabbage in for Sunday lunch so they will probably get some on Saturday & some more on Sunday or Monday. I went to NEGPR's 5th anniversary day last year & there was a very piggy knowledgeable vet there who gave a lecture on piggies thyroid problems & I can't really remember any emphasis on cabbage. I wish they'd given out notes on this lecture as it was very good but too quick to take everything in.

Sorry for your loss, I can't blame you wanting to find out why. My little Cash had a thyroid related lump that we're still waiting to get a biopsy on for a full diagnosis. Nowhere along the treatment/diagnosis route did cabbage come up though and I have a very piggy savvy vet. However his thyroid issues were hyperplastic though as opposed to hypo. From a quick bit of reading seems like hypoplastic issues are a genetic thing rather than caused by other factors.
@jenniferanneharris also has a thyroid piggy and might be able to help shed some more light on this perhaps.
